Toyota Camry 2.5 A25A-FKS (2018): Engine Oil and Oil Filter Change

On the A25A-FKS (4-cylinder 2.5 L naturally aspirated engine), change the oil every 10,000-15,000 km or once a year. The procedure is simple, and the engine undercover is easy to remove.

Difficulty: Easy Time: 30-40 minutes Steps: 20 Tools: 17 mm wrench (or an oil filter wrench), oil drain pan, funnel, rag

Part

  • 🔩 Oil filter OE 90915-10001, aftermarket equivalents Mann W 719/5, Bosch 0986 452 001. Engine oil 5W-30 or 0W-20 (depending on climate). Capacity: 3.7-3.9 L (3.9-4.1 qt) without a filter change, 4.3-4.5 L (4.5-4.8 qt) with a filter change

Step by step

20 steps
  1. Warm the engine to operating temperature (5-7 minutes of idling), then shut it off. Wait 2-3 minutes for the oil to drain back into the oil pan.
  2. Park the car on level ground or over a pit. Open the hood.
  3. Remove the engine undercover (usually 3-4 bolts, 10 mm wrench, from underneath).
  4. Position the drain pan under the oil drain plug (located at the bottom of the oil pan, on the right side in the direction of travel).
  5. Loosen the drain plug with a 17 mm wrench and drain the old oil completely (takes 5-10 minutes).
  6. Wipe the drain plug and its gasket with a clean rag. Replace the gasket if necessary (OE 90430-12031 or equivalent).
  7. Reinstall the plug and tighten to 25-35 N·m (18-26 lb-ft) (roughly "snug without stripping the threads"; do not use excessive force).
  8. Locate the oil filter. It is on the upper right side of the engine (upright orientation, cylinder yellow or black).
  9. Position the drain pan under the filter. Loosen the filter by hand about 3/4 of a turn (oil will seep out of the threaded area).
  10. Unscrew the filter completely, set it aside, and let the oil drain into the pan (30-60 seconds).
  11. Wipe the mounting surface (on the engine block where the filter was attached) with a dry, clean rag.
  12. Apply a thin layer of fresh oil to the rubber gasket of the new filter (just wet your finger with oil and run it around the gasket).
  13. Screw the new filter on by hand until the gasket makes contact, then tighten another 3/4 of a turn (the torque is not strictly specified, so go by "snug but not brutal").
  14. Reinstall the engine undercover.
  15. Open the oil filler cap (on the upper left side of the engine).
  16. Insert the funnel and pour in about 3.5-4.0 L (3.7-4.2 qt) of fresh oil (start with the lower amount).
  17. Reinstall the oil filler cap.
  18. Start the engine and let it idle for 20-30 seconds. Check for leaks at the filter and the drain plug.
  19. Shut off the engine and wait 2-3 minutes for the oil to settle.
  20. Pull out the dipstick (on the left side of the engine), wipe it with a clean rag, insert it fully into the tube, pull it out again, and check the mark. The level should be between "MIN" and "MAX" (closer to the upper mark). If necessary, add oil in small amounts (100-200 mL) and recheck.

Common mistakes and warnings

  • Use only the oil recommended in the owner's manual (usually 5W-30 or 0W-20 for the XV70; verify exactly by VIN in the owner's manual or on the Toyota website). The wrong oil viscosity can cause premature wear of the pistons, rings and cylinder walls. Take the used oil to a recycling or collection point; do not pour it down a drain.
