Mercedes-Benz A-Class 1.6 M270 (2017): 7G-DCT Dual-Clutch Transmission Fluid Change
The 7G-DCT (724.0) is a 7-speed preselective automated transmission with two wet clutches. Scheduled fluid and filter replacement is done every 60,000 km. The procedure requires special diagnostic equipment to monitor the fluid temperature and to reset the adaptations after the change.
Parts
3- 🔩 MB 236.21 transmission fluid (OE Mercedes A001 989 85 03, Shell DCT-M1, Ravenol DCT-HV or Eurol DCT), 6 L (6.3 qt)
- 🔩 two transmission filters (external filter in the pan and internal mechatronic filter)
- 🔩 transmission pan gasket

Step by step
14 steps- Warm up the engine and transmission to operating temperature (10-15 km of mixed driving), then put the car on a lift or over an inspection pit.
- Connect the scan tool and start monitoring the transmission fluid temperature. The temperature window for checking the fluid level is 40±2 °C (accuracy is critical).
- Remove the engine and transmission underbody shields and locate the transmission pan. It is NOT on the bottom of the housing, but on the front side of the transmission, secured with 8 bolts.
- Place the drain pan and remove the drain plug on the pan (installation torque 20-25 N·m (15-18 lb-ft)). Drain the fluid completely. About 5-6 L (5.3-6.3 qt) will come out.
- Remove the pan (8 bolts), take the external filter out of the pan, and clean metal debris off the pan and magnets. Install a new external filter and a new pan gasket.
- The second (internal) filter is located in the mechatronic unit inside the transmission housing. Replacing it requires partial disassembly of the transmission and is done only during major service or repair (it is not part of the scheduled fluid change). If mileage is under 100,000 km and there are no complaints about transmission operation, the internal filter can be left in place.
- Install the pan with the new gasket and tighten the 8 bolts in a crisscross pattern to 8-10 N·m (6-7 lb-ft). Do not overtighten, since the housing is aluminum.
- Locate the fill plug. It is usually on the top of the transmission housing, accessed from the engine compartment. Using the funnel, add 5.5-6 L (5.8-6.3 qt) of fresh MB 236.21 fluid.
- Close the fill plug temporarily and start the engine. With the brake pedal pressed, cycle the selector through all positions P-R-N-D and back 5-10 times to distribute the fluid through the system.
- Stop the engine and let the car sit for 3-5 minutes. Check the fluid temperature with the scan tool or an IR thermometer (pointed at the transmission pan) and bring it to 40±2 °C.
- With the engine running and the temperature at exactly 40 °C, remove the level check plug (usually on the side wall of the transmission housing). If no fluid drips out, add 0.2-0.3 L (0.2-0.3 qt). If fluid runs out in a strong stream, drain off the excess. The level is correct when the fluid drips slowly.
- Tighten the level check plug and the fill plug to 20-25 N·m (15-18 lb-ft).
- Connect the Star Diagnosis (Xentry) scan tool, enter the 7G-DCT transmission menu, and run the function to reset the fluid counter and adaptations (Reset transmission adaptation). WITHOUT this step, the transmission will keep using the old shift strategies and its behavior will remain suboptimal.
- Take a 15-20 km test drive. Slight shift delays are possible during the first 5 km (the transmission is relearning), and operation should then stabilize. Check under the car for leaks.
Common mistakes and warnings
- Using fluid that does not meet the MB 236.21 specification leads to mechatronic unit failure within a few thousand kilometers. Temperature accuracy during the level check is critical: an error of more than 2 degrees will give a wrong fluid level. The transmission cooler must be flushed before adding new fluid (blow it out with compressed air or use a flushing fluid). Resetting the adaptations with Star Diagnosis is a mandatory step, and without it the transmission will not relearn. If you do not have access to original Mercedes diagnostic equipment, take the car to a repair shop that works on the 7G-DCT.
