Toyota Hilux Surf N180 (3rd Generation): Checking the Automatic Transmission Fluid Level
Checking the fluid level in the automatic transmission of a Toyota Hilux Surf N180 with the 3RZ-FE engine is done with the transmission warmed up and the engine running. The procedure takes about 15 minutes and requires no special equipment.
Part
- 🔩 If topping off is needed, ATF Dexron III automatic transmission fluid (total transmission capacity is about 7.6 L (8.0 qt); topping off usually takes 0.2-0.5 L (0.2-0.5 qt))
Step by step
10 steps- Warm up the transmission. Drive 10-15 km under normal conditions, or let the engine idle for 5-10 minutes while shifting the selector lever through all positions (P-R-N-D-2-L and back). The ATF temperature should be 70-80 °C.
- Park the vehicle on a level, flat surface and set the parking brake.
- Move the selector lever to P (Park). The engine must keep running at idle.
- Open the hood and find the transmission dipstick. It is usually located at the rear of the engine compartment, close to the firewall, and has a red or yellow handle marked ATF or Transmission.
- Pull the dipstick all the way out and wipe it with a clean rag or paper towel.
- Push the dipstick all the way back in, then pull it out again and read the fluid level.
- On a warmed-up transmission, the normal level is between the HOT (upper) and COLD (lower) marks, closer to HOT. The difference between these marks is approximately 1 L (1.1 qt).
- Check the condition of the fluid. It should be clear with a pinkish tint. Dark color or a burnt smell indicates the ATF needs to be replaced.
- If the level is below the HOT mark, add fluid through the dipstick tube using a funnel in small amounts (0.2-0.3 L (0.2-0.3 qt) at a time), checking the level after each addition.
- After checking, push the dipstick back in all the way and close the hood.
Common mistakes and warnings
- Checking the ATF level on a cold transmission gives incorrect readings, because the fluid expands as it heats up. Always check with the transmission warmed up and the engine running. Overfilling is just as harmful as underfilling. It can cause the ATF to foam and damage the valve body. Do not shut off the engine during the check, because the fluid will drain back into the pan and the reading will be too low.
