Renault Talisman 1.6 16v TCe (2019): Air Filter Replacement

The air filter on the 1.6 TCe engine (H5F or M5M) in the Talisman should be replaced every 15,000-20,000 km (9,000-12,500 miles). The housing is on the right side of the engine, access is easy, and the job requires no tools.

Step by step

7 steps
  1. Open the hood. Locate the black plastic filter housing on the right side of the engine (passenger side on a left-hand-drive car).
  2. There are 4 spring clips around the edge of the housing cover. Release them one at a time, pulling the cover slightly toward you.
  3. Lift the cover up. The corrugated hose with the MAF (mass airflow) sensor stays connected, so don't pull on it.
  4. Remove the old filter. Wipe the inside of the housing with a dry, lint-free cloth and remove any dust and leaves.
  5. Install the new filter with the pleats facing down (the direction is shown by the arrow on the housing).
  6. Snap the cover back into place and make sure all 4 clips are back in their original position.
  7. Close the hood.

Common mistakes and warnings

  • Do not use homemade or non-certified filters. They let abrasive particles through, and dust gets into the cylinders and shortens the life of the pistons and rings. This is especially critical on the gasoline TCe engine because of its high requirements for clean intake air.
