Renault Talisman 1.6 TCe 200 (2024): Spark Plug Replacement

The M5M 1.6 TCe 200 engine has an individual ignition coil on each spark plug. The spark plug replacement interval is every 60,000 km or every 4 years. The procedure does not require removing any major components, and access is clear once the coils are removed.

Difficulty: Easy Time: 30-40 minutes Steps: 12 Tools: 8 mm socket, 14 mm spark plug socket (long), extension, ratchet, torque wrench

Step by step

12 steps
  1. Turn the ignition off and open the hood. Make sure the engine has cooled down (engine surface temperature below 40 °C).
  2. Locate the 4 ignition coils on the cylinder head cover. Each coil is mounted directly on a spark plug.
  3. Disconnect the coil electrical connector: press the locking tab and pull the connector sideways.
  4. Use an 8 mm socket to remove the coil retaining bolt (one bolt per coil).
  5. Pull the coil straight up out of the well. If it is stuck tight, pull it with a rocking motion and do not yank it (the rubber boot can get stuck).
  6. Use a 14 mm spark plug socket (preferably a long magnetic one) to unscrew the plug from the well. The plugs sit deep, so use an extension and a ratchet.
  7. Visually inspect the new plug. The gap should be 0.9-1.0 mm (usually set at the factory and needs no adjustment).
  8. Thread the new plug in by hand until it seats (to avoid cross-threading), then tighten it with a torque wrench to 17-20 N·m (13-15 lb-ft). (The technical data for the M5M specifies 17 N·m (13 lb-ft). The general recommendation for an M12x1.25 plug with a gasket in an aluminum cylinder head is 18-22 N·m (13-16 lb-ft).)
  9. Seat the ignition coil in the well until it clicks, then tighten the 8 mm bolt (torque 8-10 N·m (6-7 lb-ft), do not overtighten).
  10. Connect the coil connector until the lock clicks.
  11. Repeat steps 3-10 for the remaining three cylinders.
  12. Close the hood and start the engine. Check that it runs smoothly (idle should be even, with no misfires).

Common mistakes and warnings

  • Do not drop a spark plug on a hard surface. The ceramic insulator can develop a hairline crack, and the plug can then cause spark breakdown (misfire). Do not use plugs with the wrong gap, or non-OE plugs without a stated M5M compatibility. This leads to knock (detonation) and shortens the life of the pistons and rings.
