Renault Talisman 1.5 dCi K9K (2019): Fuel Filter Replacement

The fuel filter on the K9K (1.5 diesel) protects the Common Rail injectors from contamination. Replace it every 30,000-40,000 km or every 2 years. On the first-generation Talisman, the filter is located under the floor, and you can reach it from a pit or a lift. The procedure requires relieving the pressure in the system and working with fuel lines, so allow plenty of time and pay close attention.

Step by step

15 steps
  1. Park the car on level ground, shut off the engine, and let it cool for 10-15 minutes.
  2. Open the hood and find the fuel pump fuse in the fuse box on the left under the dash panel (black box). Remove fuse F71 (15 A, fuel pump). This cuts power to the pump.
  3. Start the engine and let it idle for 10-15 seconds while the fuel pressure drops. The engine will stall. This is normal.
  4. Turn the ignition off and put the fuse back in (do not turn the ignition on yet).
  5. Raise the front of the car on a lift or drive it over a pit, and remove the wheel (if it blocks access).
  6. Find the fuel filter under the floor, just behind the right front wheel. It is a cylindrical plastic/metal housing with inlet and outlet fittings.
  7. Disconnect the negative battery terminal (an extra precaution, but good practice when working with fuel).
  8. Place the container under the filter and carefully disconnect the two fuel lines (usually quick-release connectors: press the retainer and pull the line off). Residual fuel of 0.2-0.5 L (0.2-0.5 qt) will drain out of the filter. This is normal.
  9. Remove the filter mounting bolt (10 mm) under the floor, take off the bracket, and pull the filter upward.
  10. Take the new filter and make sure the arrow on the housing points toward the engine (upward). Install the filter in the bracket and tighten the bolt (torque 6-8 N·m (4.4-5.9 lb-ft); the base is plastic, so do not overtighten).
  11. Reconnect both fuel lines until they click (make sure they are fully seated).
  12. Reconnect the negative battery terminal and put fuse F71 back in place.
  13. Turn the ignition on (WITHOUT starting the engine) for 3-5 seconds. The fuel pump will run and fill the new filter. Wait for the click of the shut-off relay.
  14. Start the engine, let it idle for 30 seconds, and check under the car for fuel leaks. If it drips, the lines are not seated properly. Redo the connection.
  15. Lower the car and take a test drive of 5-10 km. Make sure there is no loss of power and no unusual noises during acceleration.

Common mistakes and warnings

  • Work in a well-ventilated area, as fuel vapors are toxic. Smoking and open flames are prohibited. If the check engine light comes on when you start the engine, wait 30 seconds. It may be a fuel pressure error caused by air in the system, and it should clear on its own. If the light does not go out, diagnose the car with a scan tool.
