Toyota Hiace 3.0 Diesel 1KD-FTV (2014): Fuel Filter Replacement

On the 1KD-FTV engine, the fuel filter is mounted in a housing next to the cylinder block. Replacement requires removing the filter housing, taking out the old element and installing a new one, followed by mandatory priming of the fuel system. Replacement interval: every 40,000 km or 2 years.

Difficulty: Medium Time: 45-60 minutes Steps: 17 Tools: Bench vise, 10 mm and 12 mm sockets, torque wrench, fuel drain pan (1-2 L (1.1-2.1 qt)), shop rags, special filter removal tool SST 09228-64040 (alternative: chain wrench)

Part

  • 🔩 Toyota 23390-0L050 (filter element assembly), water sensor O-ring

Step by step

17 steps
  1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal. Let the engine cool down.
  2. Place a drain pan under the filter. Disconnect the 2 fuel hoses from the filter housing and plug them with a clean rag.
  3. Disconnect the connectors of the water level sensor and the fuel heater (if equipped).
  4. Remove the 2 nuts securing the filter housing (installation torque: 18 N·m (13 lb-ft)). Remove the housing.
  5. Unscrew the drain plug at the bottom of the housing and drain the remaining fuel into the pan.
  6. Remove the 2 bolts and take off the drain port cover (assembly torque: 2.6 N·m (23 lb-in)).
  7. Clamp the filter cover in the vise (do not overtighten, the plastic can crack!). Using the SST 09228-64040 tool or a chain wrench, unscrew the water level sensor counterclockwise. Remove the old O-ring.
  8. Using the same tool, unscrew the filter element from the housing.
  9. Wipe the inside of the housing with a clean lint-free cloth. Check that there is no dirt or water in the lower part.
  10. Install the new O-ring on the water sensor and lubricate it with clean diesel fuel. Thread the sensor into the new filter element by hand until it stops.
  11. Screw the new filter element with the sensor into the housing. No torque is specified: tighten by hand until it stops, then add a quarter turn with the tool (do not overtighten the plastic threads).
  12. Install the drain port cover with a new gasket. Tighten the 2 bolts to 2.6 N·m (23 lb-in).
  13. Tighten the drain plug.
  14. Install the filter housing in place and start the 2 nuts by hand. Connect the fuel hoses and sensor connectors. Tighten the nuts to 18 N·m (13 lb-ft).
  15. Prime the fuel system: pump the manual primer (the priming pump on the fuel filter or on the injection pump) 20-30 times until you feel resistance and the filter fills with fuel.
  16. Reconnect the battery. Start the engine. For the first 5-10 seconds it will run roughly while air is purged. Check for fuel leaks. If the engine stalls, repeat priming with the primer.
  17. Reset the filter replacement indicator (if equipped on the instrument cluster) according to the owner's manual.

Common mistakes and warnings

  • Work in a well-ventilated area, away from open flames. Diesel fuel is flammable. Wear protective gloves, since prolonged contact of fuel with skin causes irritation. Do not let dirt get into the fuel system, as it can damage the injectors and the injection pump. If you are unsure about doing the job cleanly or do not have the special removal tool, have a repair shop do the work.
