Toyota Hiace H200 (2014): Differential Oil Change
A 2014 Hiace H200 2WD has one rear differential. A 4WD model has two (front and rear). An oil change is recommended every 40,000-50,000 km, even though Toyota's maintenance schedule lists the oil as lifetime. The procedure is the same for both axles. Only the oil volume differs.
Part
- 🔩 API GL-5 gear oil, 80W-90 or 75W-85 (rear axle: 3.1-3.3 L (3.3-3.5 qt) standard or 3.4-3.6 L (3.6-3.8 qt) with LSD; front axle on 4WD: 1.4 L (1.5 qt)). Toyota drain plug washers 12157-10010 (2 per axle, single-use)
Step by step
10 steps- Warm up the differential with a short drive (5-10 minutes). Warm oil drains completely.
- Put the vehicle on a lift or raise it with a jack, strictly level. A tilt will throw off the fill level.
- Clean the area around the fill plug (the upper one, usually on the side of the differential housing).
- Remove the fill plug FIRST with a 24 mm wrench. If it is seized, do not drain the oil until you are sure you can refill the new oil.
- Place a drain pan under the drain plug (the lower one, on the differential housing) and remove it with a 24 mm wrench.
- Wait for the oil to drain completely (5-10 minutes). Inspect the drained oil. Metal shavings or an emulsion (milky look) are signs of wear or water getting in.
- Replace the drain plug's aluminum washer with a new one (12157-10010) and tighten the plug to 49 N·m (36 lb-ft).
- Slowly add fresh oil through the fill hole with a syringe or pump: rear axle without LSD 3.1-3.3 L (3.3-3.5 qt), with LSD 3.4-3.6 L (3.6-3.8 qt) (GL-5 LSD oil), front axle on 4WD 1.4 L (1.5 qt). Keep filling until oil starts to run out of the fill hole.
- Replace the fill plug's washer with a new one and tighten the plug to 49 N·m (36 lb-ft).
- Lower the vehicle, drive 5 km, and check for leaks under the differential.
Common mistakes and warnings
- If your Hiace has a rear axle with a limited-slip differential (LSD), use only special GL-5 LSD oil. Regular GL-5 will damage the friction clutch packs. An LSD is indicated by a sticker on the differential housing or a marking on the VIN plate. If the vehicle has more than 100,000 km, the old oil contains sludge. Brief noises are possible after the change until the system flushes out.
