Opel Astra J 1.6 (A16XER): Fuel Filter Service

The gasoline Opel Astra J with the A16XER engine has no serviceable fuel filter as standard. The fine filter is built into the fuel pump module inside the tank and is designed to last the life of the vehicle. If the filter clogs, the factory procedure is to replace the entire module. An alternative is to install an external filter under the floor to make servicing easier.

Difficulty: Medium Time: 2-3 hours (with the tank removed) Steps: 13 Tools: jack and jack stands, socket set, screwdrivers, container for draining fuel, clean rags

Part

  • 🔩 The fuel filter is integrated into the fuel pump module (OE GM 13588662, Bosch 0580200039). Alternative: install an external inline filter (ST342 filter, quick-connect fittings, hoses, bracket)

Step by step

13 steps
  1. Identify the problem. Hard starting, jerking during acceleration, and hesitation when you press the gas pedal point to a clogged filter in the pump module.
  2. Option A, standard service: Raise the rear of the vehicle and support it on jack stands. Remove the fuel tank shield (if fitted).
  3. Relieve the pressure in the fuel line. Disconnect the fuel pump connector under the rear seat or in the trunk, start the engine, and let it run until it stalls from lack of fuel.
  4. Drain the fuel from the tank through the drain plug, or pump it out through the filler neck (the tank should be almost empty).
  5. Disconnect the fuel hoses and the electrical connector from the pump module, then unscrew the module's retaining ring (counterclockwise).
  6. Lift the module straight out of the tank, carefully guiding out the fuel level sensor float. Drain the remaining fuel from the module into a container.
  7. Inspect the integrated filter. If it is clogged with dark deposits, replace the entire module with a new one (standard option), or disassemble the module and install an external filter (see Option B).
  8. Option B, installing an external filter: Cut off the top part of the module that contains the integrated filter and remove the old filter.
  9. Route the fuel line out of the module, and install an external filter (for example, ST342) with quick-connect fittings under the floor near the tank, so it is easy to replace every 15,000-20,000 km.
  10. Secure the filter with a bracket and a plastic zip tie, making sure the flow direction matches the arrow on the filter body.
  11. Reassemble in reverse order. Install the module in the tank, tighten the retaining ring (torque 40-50 N·m (30-37 lb-ft)), and connect the hoses and the connector.
  12. Add fuel to the tank. Turn the ignition on for 3-5 seconds (without starting the engine) 2-3 times to fill the fuel line.
  13. Start the engine and inspect the connections under the floor for leaks. Fix any seepage by tightening the clamps.

Common mistakes and warnings

  • Working on the fuel system requires strict fire safety: no open flames, no smoking, no spark-producing tools. Gasoline vapors are explosive. Work in a well-ventilated area or outdoors. The external filter option is a non-factory modification that the manufacturer does not provide for. Do it at your own risk, for easier servicing if you use low-quality fuel.
