Hyundai Getz 1.3 12V (G4EA): Power Steering Belt Tension Adjustment

The power steering belt on the Getz 1.3 is adjusted by shifting the power steering pump body. When correctly tensioned, belt deflection on the longest span should be no more than 10 mm when pressed with a thumb using about 10 kg (22 lb) of force. A loose belt slips and squeals, while an overtightened belt causes accelerated wear of the pump and water pump bearings.

Difficulty: Easy Time: 15-20 minutes Steps: 8 Tools: 12-14 mm socket or wrench, pry bar or heavy-duty flat-blade screwdriver, ruler

Part

  • 🔩 4PK613 belt (613 mm length, 4 ribs), part number 57170-02710. Aftermarket equivalents: Dongil, Gates, Continental

Step by step

8 steps
  1. Open the hood and locate the power steering pump on the left side of the engine (above the alternator). The belt runs to it from the crankshaft.
  2. Check the current tension by pressing with your thumb on the middle of the longest belt span between the pulleys. Deflection should not exceed 10 mm. If it is more, the belt is too loose.
  3. Loosen the power steering pump mounting bolt on the right (the nut securing the pump pivot) by 1-2 turns, then loosen the adjusting bracket lock bolt on the left by 1-2 turns.
  4. Insert a pry bar or heavy-duty screwdriver between the power steering pump body and the engine block, using it as a lever. Pull the pump away from the engine (outward) to increase belt tension.
  5. While holding the pump in the pulled-out position, tighten the adjusting bracket lock bolt to 15-22 N·m (11-16 lb-ft) if you have a torque wrench, or firmly by hand.
  6. Tighten the pump pivot mounting bolt to 20-25 N·m (15-18 lb-ft), or firmly by hand.
  7. Check the tension again. Deflection should be 8-10 mm. Start the engine and turn the steering wheel fully left and right. The belt should not squeal.
  8. After 100-150 km (60-90 miles), check the tension again. The belt may stretch slightly, so repeat the adjustment if needed.

Common mistakes and warnings

  • Do not overtighten the belt. Excessive tension destroys the bearings of the power steering pump, alternator and water pump. If the belt is worn (cracks, delamination, glazed rib surfaces), replace it. Adjustment will not help.
