Hyundai H1 (2nd Generation, TQ): Parking Brake Effectiveness Check
The parking brake on the Hyundai H1/Grand Starex is mechanically actuated and works on the rear drum brakes. It is checked by two criteria: lever travel (number of clicks) and the ability to hold the vehicle on an incline. Typical specifications for Hyundai passenger/cargo vehicles are 5-8 clicks at 20 kg of force, and holding on a 16-25 degree slope.
Parts
2- 🔩 Not required (for the check)
- 🔩 if faulty: left/right parking brake cable, rear drum brake shoes

Step by step
6 steps- Park the vehicle on a flat, level surface. Put the selector in neutral (or Park for automatic transmissions) and turn the engine off.
- Check the parking brake lever travel: lower the lever fully, then pull it up until it stops, counting the distinct clicks. Apply a force of about 20 kg (196 N, 44 lb). You can hang a weight on the lever or have a helper pull with that force. The specification for the H1 is 6-8 clicks. If there are more than 10 clicks or fewer than 4, the cable needs adjustment.
- Check the holding ability: on a safe surface with a 15-20 degree slope (preferably in both directions), apply the parking brake by 5-6 clicks, put the selector in neutral, and release the service brake pedal. The vehicle should stay stationary, without rolling, for at least 1 minute. If the vehicle rolls or creeps slowly, the parking brake is faulty (stretched cable, worn shoes, or contaminated drums).
- Visually inspect the parking brake cables under the vehicle. There should be no torn sheathing, corrosion, or binding. The cables should move freely when the lever is raised and lowered.
- Check the indicator on the instrument cluster: with the lever raised, the red BRAKE light (or parking brake symbol) should come on. When the lever is lowered, the light should go out completely.
- If you find any deviation (lever travel of more than 8 clicks, or weak holding on a slope), adjust the cable tension with the adjusting nut under the vehicle (located on the cable equalizer, behind the transmission tunnel). Tighten the nut until you get 6-7 clicks during the check.
Common mistakes and warnings
- A faulty parking brake creates a risk of the vehicle, weighing up to 2.5 tonnes, rolling away on its own when stopped on a slope. This can lead to a collision and injuries. Check parking brake effectiveness every 15-20 thousand km, when replacing the rear brake shoes, and after replacing the cables. If adjusting the cable does not help, check the wear of the rear drum brake shoes (the minimum allowable lining thickness is 1.5 mm). Do not test the parking brake on public roads or in parking lots with heavy traffic.
