Infiniti QX70 (1st Generation): Climate Control Blend Door Actuator Assembly
The blend door actuator on the Infiniti QX70 controls the mix of cold and hot air. A typical failure is a distinctive clicking or knocking noise ("woodpecker" sound) caused by worn or broken plastic gears inside the actuator. Reassembly after a repair or replacement requires correct gear installation and proper alignment of the actuator to the blend door.
Part
- 🔩 Blend door actuator (gear motor, OE 27732-4GF0C or 27732-AM610, depending on trim/equipment). Aftermarket: Dorman (cases of defects reported, so OEM is preferable)
Step by step
8 steps- Prepare the actuator: if you are repairing the old actuator (replacing gears), open the housing by carefully releasing the plastic housing clips without damaging them. Inside are the gears and the electric motor.
- Inspect the gears: check all gears for chips and worn teeth. The white plastic blend door drive gear often loses teeth or slips out of mesh, which is the main cause of the failure.
- Replace worn parts: if teeth are missing or damaged, replace the gears (if a repair kit is available) or the entire actuator assembly. Some DIYers rebuild the splines with hard RTV sealant (Permatex Ultra Gray): clean the surface with solvent, coat the mold with petroleum jelly, apply the sealant, and let it cure overnight. This is only a temporary fix.
- Assemble the actuator: install the gears in the correct order: the drive gear on the motor shaft, the intermediate gears in the housing, and the output gear with the notch that engages the blend door shaft. Make sure all gears turn smoothly without binding.
- Align the blend door position: IMPORTANT: before installing the actuator on the HVAC unit, do NOT change the position of the blend door itself (the oval shaft with a notch on the heater box). The actuator has a notch on the output gear that must line up with the position of the door shaft during installation.
- Install the actuator on the unit: align the actuator's output gear with the blend door shaft, making sure the notch and the pin match up. Secure the actuator to the heater box housing with three screws (two screws use a 7 mm wrench, one uses a 5.5 mm). Tightening torque is 2-3 N·m (18-27 lb-in). Tighten by hand until snug, without overtightening, because the housing is plastic.
- Connect the connector: plug the electrical connector into the actuator. Turn the ignition on and move the climate control temperature from minimum to maximum. The actuator should rotate smoothly without clicking or knocking.
- Test operation: start the engine and check the temperature changes at all settings: cold, warm, and auto. The vents should deliver air of the corresponding temperature without any unusual noises.
Common mistakes and warnings
- During assembly, do not mix up the blend door position. Incorrect installation will cause the climate control to work improperly (constant cold or constant heat). If the clicking persists after installing a new actuator, check the condition of the blend door shaft and the door itself inside the heater box. The door may be binding because of a deformed housing or a foreign object.
