Lada Vesta (First Generation): Parking Brake Cable Replacement
The parking brake cables on a Lada Vesta with rear drum brakes should be replaced if they have stretched, if the strands have broken, or if the cable housing is corroded. Signs of wear include the parking brake holding only at 8-10 clicks instead of the specified 6-9, or failing to hold the car on a slope. The procedure requires raising the rear of the vehicle and removing the rear wheels.
Part
- 🔩 Rear parking brake cables 8450006880 (set of two for drum brakes, length 1870 mm)
Step by step
9 steps- Place the vehicle on a lift, or raise the rear end with a jack and support it on jack stands under the rocker panels (sills). Remove the rear wheels with a 17 mm wrench.
- Lower the parking brake lever in the cabin all the way down. Remove the decorative trim on the floor tunnel, or otherwise gain access to the adjusting nut under the parking brake lever.
- Loosen the adjusting nut with a 10 mm wrench to completely release the cable tension. Disconnect both cables from the equalizer (the rod that the cable loops are hooked onto).
- Under the vehicle, pull the cable housings out of the plastic or metal bracket holders on the underbody (usually 2-3 mounting points per cable). If the mounts are seized, treat them with WD-40.
- Remove the brake drums (if necessary, unscrew the guide pin with a 13 mm wrench). Inside the drum, disconnect the cable end from the parking brake shoe actuating lever (squeeze the spring clip with pliers or pull out the pin).
- Pull the old cable out of the hole in the rear axle backing plate. Repeat the procedure for the second cable.
- Install the new cables in reverse order: pass the cable end through the hole in the backing plate, secure it to the shoe lever, install the drums, secure the housings in the underbody brackets, and hook the loops onto the equalizer.
- Adjust the tension: set the parking brake lever to the 2nd click, then tighten the nut with a 10 mm wrench until the rear wheels can no longer be turned by hand. Release the lever and check that the wheels spin freely. Pull the parking brake up and release it several times, and make sure it locks securely within 6-9 clicks.
- Install the wheels and tighten the wheel bolts to 90-110 N·m (66-81 lb-ft). Lower the vehicle.
Common mistakes and warnings
- Adjusting the parking brake after replacing the cables is mandatory. Incorrect tension will cause either brake drag while driving (too tight) or a failure to hold on a slope (too loose). Test its operation on a slope before returning the car to service. Replace both cables at the same time, even if only one is damaged. They stretch at the same rate, and cables of different lengths will throw off the adjustment.
