Lada Vesta 1.8 16V VAZ-21179 (2019): Engine Oil and Oil Filter Change

The 1.8 engine meets the Euro 5 emissions standard, so it needs quality oil, and counterfeit oil can seriously damage the engine. Change the oil every 15,000 km or once a year. For heavy city driving, it is better to shorten the interval to 10,000 km.

Difficulty: Easy Time: 40-60 minutes Steps: 12 Tools: 8 mm hex key (for the drain plug), oil filter wrench (chain or claw type), drain pan of 5 L (5.3 qt) or larger, funnel, ratchet wrench, rags, lift, pit or drive-on ramp

Part

  • 🔩 5W-30 or 5W-40 oil (AvtoVAZ recommendation), about 4.4 L (4.7 qt) including the filter. Oil filter for the 1.8 engine (VAZ-21179), spin-on type. Copper or aluminum drain plug sealing washer

Step by step

12 steps
  1. Warm the engine up to operating temperature, shut it off, and wait 10-15 minutes so the oil cools slightly and drains down into the oil pan. Park the car on a level surface, over a pit, or on a lift.
  2. Remove the engine skid plate (underbody shield) if one is installed.
  3. Place a drain pan of at least 5 L (5.3 qt) under the oil pan drain plug. Unscrew the plug with the 8 mm hex key. Draining takes about 15 minutes, so wait until the oil stops dripping.
  4. Locate the oil filter on the rear side of the cylinder block. Access is tight because of the large rib of the exhaust system heat shield. To avoid damaging the crankshaft position sensor connector, disconnect it if necessary.
  5. Unscrew the old filter with the filter wrench (chain or claw type). It usually will not come off by hand. Place rags underneath, because the remaining oil will run out of the filter.
  6. Wipe the mounting surface on the block. Make sure the old sealing ring has not stayed behind on the block.
  7. Lubricate the rubber sealing ring of the new filter with clean oil. Screw the filter on by hand only, without the wrench, until the ring touches the mounting surface, then tighten it about another 3/4 turn, or as indicated on the filter itself. Do not overtighten.
  8. Install a new washer on the drain plug. Screw the plug in and tighten it with moderate force, without jerking and without a cheater bar or extension. Check the torque specification in the manufacturer's service manual so you do not strip the threads in the aluminum oil pan.
  9. Reinstall the engine skid plate.
  10. Pour about 80% of the required amount (approximately 3.5 L (3.7 qt)) through the oil filler neck. Wait a few minutes for the oil to spread, then top up to a level just below the MAX mark on the dipstick. Do not fill above the maximum.
  11. Start the engine for 1-2 minutes. The oil pressure warning light should go out a few seconds after startup. Inspect the filter and the drain plug for leaks.
  12. Shut off the engine, wait 5-10 minutes, and check the level on the dipstick. Top up to the correct mark if needed. Reset the service interval reminder if it is shown on the instrument cluster.

Common mistakes and warnings

  • Do not reuse the old drain plug washer, and do not overtighten the plug or the filter, as this is the main cause of leaks and stripped threads. Do not fill the oil above the MAX mark. Take used oil to a collection point, and do not pour it onto the ground or down a drain. If the car is on a lift, make sure it is securely locked in place. Hot oil and the exhaust system can cause burns.
