Mazda CX-5 (2nd Generation): Front Door Trim Panel Removal and Installation

Removing the front door trim panel on the second-generation CX-5 (2017 and later) requires the correct sequence. Do not pull the panel straight up as on older models, because this will break clips F, hooks G and pin H. The panel is held by two screws and a system of snap clips around the perimeter. It comes off after you disconnect the handle and the power window switch.

Difficulty: Medium Time: 30-40 minutes Steps: 15 Tools: Phillips screwdriver, flathead screwdriver (wrapped in electrical tape), plastic pry tool, 10 mm socket, 1/4" ratchet

Part

  • 🔩 Plastic clips may be damaged during removal — upper trim panel clip KB7W-68-AB1, side clip GJ6A-68-AB1

Step by step

15 steps
  1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal, lower the window completely, and open the door fully.
  2. Pull the inner door handle open and find the decorative cover behind it. Pry it off with a flathead screwdriver (wrapped in electrical tape) and remove it, releasing tabs A and pin B.
  3. Remove screw C under the cover with a Phillips screwdriver.
  4. In the armrest pocket, remove the rubber plug on the bottom, then remove screw E behind it with a 10 mm socket.
  5. Insert a plastic pry tool between the bottom edge of the trim panel and the door metal. Release the friction clips along the entire bottom edge and both sides, working gradually.
  6. Release the clip in the upper inner corner (near the mirror). It is fragile, so work carefully.
  7. Pull the panel in the direction of the arrows (sequence 1-4, shown on the service diagram: first sideways away from the door, then down), releasing clips F (around the perimeter), hooks G (top) and pin H (center) at the same time. Do not pull the panel straight up. That is the old method and it will break the fasteners.
  8. Once the panel is free of the clips, carefully lift it off the top edge of the door's metal frame.
  9. Release tab I in the direction shown on the diagram, then disconnect the inner handle by releasing tab J.
  10. Disconnect the power window switch connector (press the lock tab). The panel is now free. Installation:
  11. Connect the power window switch connector, attach the inner handle (tab J), and install tab I.
  12. Align the panel with the top edge of the door's metal frame, seat hooks G, pin H and clips F, then press around the perimeter with your palm until they click.
  13. Install screw E in the armrest pocket and close the rubber plug.
  14. Install screw C behind the inner handle, then install the decorative cover (snap in tabs A and pin B).
  15. Reconnect the negative battery terminal and check the operation of the power windows, locks and handle.

Common mistakes and warnings

  • Do not pull the panel up as on older models. On this generation it will almost certainly break hooks G. The upper clip near the mirror is fragile. If it breaks, the panel will still be held securely by the other fasteners. Do not overtighten the screws during assembly, because the plastic will crack. If the panel does not seat, check that the door weatherstrip is not pinched under the edge of the panel.
