Mazda CX-5 2.0 SKYACTIV-G (PE-VPS) (2017): Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement

Changing the engine oil on the 2.0 SKYACTIV-G (PE-VPS) engine is a basic maintenance procedure. The scheduled interval is 15,000 km or once a year; for severe-duty use, shortening it to 7,500-10,000 km is recommended. The engine uses a spin-on (screw-on) oil filter and 0W-20 synthetic oil.

Difficulty: Easy Time: 30-40 minutes Steps: 14 Tools: jack and jack stands, 8 mm Allen (hex) key, Phillips screwdriver, flat-blade screwdriver or 8 mm socket, oil filter wrench (optional), funnel, drain pan for used oil (5 L (5.3 qt) or larger), torque wrench (recommended)

Parts

3
  • 🔩 oil filter PE01-14-302B (equivalents: Bosch 3300, Mobil 1 M1-108, K&N PS-1008)
  • 🔩 SAE 0W-20 synthetic engine oil, 4.4 L (4.6 qt) (4.2 L (4.4 qt) without the filter)
  • 🔩 drain plug washer (recommended at every oil change)

Step by step

14 steps
  1. Warm up the engine for 5-10 minutes, then shut it off and let it sit for 3-5 minutes so the oil drains down into the oil pan. Hot oil drains faster and carries away more contaminants, but be careful: there is a burn risk.
  2. Park the car on level ground. Open the hood, unscrew the oil filler cap counterclockwise, and pull the dipstick out by 2-3 cm. This prevents a vacuum from forming in the system and speeds up draining.
  3. Raise the front of the car with a jack and set it on jack stands. Never work under a car supported only by a jack.
  4. Remove the center service panel in the engine undercover: pull out the plastic clip with a flat-blade screwdriver and remove the two 8 mm bolts (Phillips or socket).
  5. Place the drain pan under the drain plug (located at the bottom of the oil pan, on the passenger side). Use the 8 mm Allen key to unscrew the drain plug counterclockwise. For the last 2-3 turns, work quickly and pull your hand away, because the oil will start flowing immediately and under pressure. Let the oil drain for at least 5-7 minutes.
  6. Inspect the copper/aluminum washer on the drain plug. If it is deformed, replace it with a new one (M14 diameter). Wipe the plug with a clean rag and thread it back in by hand until it stops, then tighten it with a torque wrench to 30-41 N·m (22-30 lb-ft). Do not overtighten, because the threads in the aluminum oil pan can strip.
  7. Move the pan under the oil filter (on the front side of the engine block, accessed from below). Unscrew the old filter counterclockwise by hand. If it will not budge, use a chain-type or cup-type filter wrench. Another 100-200 ml of oil will spill out as you remove it.
  8. Wipe the filter mounting surface on the engine block with a clean rag. Take the new PE01-14-302B filter and lubricate the rubber gasket with a thin layer of clean engine oil (dip your finger in new oil and run it around the gasket).
  9. Thread the new filter on by hand clockwise until the gasket touches the block (you will feel light resistance), then tighten it another quarter to one-third turn (90-120 degrees). Do not use a wrench for tightening. Hand strength is enough; otherwise the filter will be impossible to remove at the next change, or the gasket may tear.
  10. Lower the car to the ground (or leave it on the stands to check for leaks). Place the funnel in the oil filler neck and first pour in 4 L (4.2 qt) of new 0W-20 oil. Wait a minute for the oil to drain down into the pan.
  11. Screw on the filler cap and put the dipstick back in. Start the engine and let it idle for 10-15 seconds. The oil will fill the filter and oil passages, and the oil pressure warning light on the instrument cluster will go out. Shut off the engine.
  12. Wait 5-10 minutes for the oil to drain down into the pan. Pull out the dipstick, wipe it with a clean cloth, insert it all the way, and pull it out again to check the level. The level should be between the MIN and MAX marks on the dipstick (ideally 5-10 mm below MAX). If it is low, add 100-200 ml and recheck after 2-3 minutes.
  13. Reinstall the service panel on the engine undercover (clip plus two bolts). Look under the car and make sure there are no oil leaks around the drain plug and filter. If there are, tighten the plug or filter by a quarter turn.
  14. Dispose of the used oil and old filter at a designated collection facility. Do not pour them down a drain or onto the ground.

Common mistakes and warnings

  • Do not overfill the oil above the MAX mark. Excess oil creates excess pressure in the crankcase and can push out the crankshaft seals or the valve cover gasket. Always use 0W-20 oil as specified by the manufacturer. Other viscosities (5W-30, 5W-40) impair the operation of the variable valve timing system and increase fuel consumption on SKYACTIV-G engines. Check the oil level every 1,000 km. Consumption of up to 100 ml per 1,000 km is considered normal for this type of engine.
