Nissan Fuga 3.5 VQ35HR (2009): Standard Engine Start-Up and Warm-Up Procedure
The Fuga Y50 starts with a push button when the Intelligent Key is inside the cabin. The VQ35HR engine does not need a long warm-up while parked: just give the oil time to circulate and start driving at moderate RPM. Check the exact details for your trim (manual/automatic transmission, market) against your vehicle's owner's manual.
Part
- 🔩 Not required. For reliable starting, keep an eye on the condition of the battery, the Intelligent Key fob battery and the freshness of the fuel
Step by step
9 steps- Before starting, make sure the key fob is inside the cabin (pocket, cup holder, console). If there is no key in the cabin, the system will display a warning and the engine will not start.
- Sit down, buckle up, and check that the automatic transmission selector is in P (or N). On manual transmission cars, press the clutch pedal all the way down and put the shifter in neutral.
- Press and hold the brake pedal (on automatic models the engine can only be started with the brake pressed). Do not touch the accelerator pedal: the fuel injection system will adjust the mixture enrichment on its own.
- Press the ENGINE START/STOP button once and release it when the starter has cranked the engine and it has started. Do not hold the starter for longer than 10-15 seconds per attempt. If the engine does not start, wait 10-15 seconds and try again.
- After a cold start, idle speed will be elevated (about 1,000-1,500 rpm) and will drop within 1-2 minutes. Check the instrument cluster: the oil pressure, battery charging and Check Engine warning lights should not be on.
- Warm-up: in warm weather, 30-60 seconds is enough; in winter, in temperatures below -15 °C (5 °F), allow 1-3 minutes. After that, continue warming up while driving, avoiding hard acceleration and engine speeds above 3,500-4,000 rpm until the temperature gauge needle reaches the middle of the scale.
- Before pulling away, set the desired heater mode and turn on the window defrosting, release the parking brake (if it is a hand-operated or foot-operated one), select D or first gear, and pull away smoothly.
- Shutting off: stop the car, move the selector to P, and press the ENGINE START/STOP button. After a long drive at high RPM, let the engine idle for 20-30 seconds.
- When starting after a long period of sitting (more than 2-3 weeks), first turn the ignition on without starting the engine for 2-3 seconds so the fuel pump can build pressure, then start the engine as usual.
Common mistakes and warnings
- Do not run the engine in a closed garage without ventilation: exhaust gases contain carbon monoxide. If the starter turns slowly, the gauges flicker, or a key-related message appears on the display, first check the battery voltage (normal with the engine off is about 12.4-12.7 V) and replace the key fob battery. If the engine consistently fails to start, stalls, or the Check Engine light is on, take the car in for diagnostics.
