Nissan Presage (1st generation, U30): Rear Quarter Window Replacement
On the Nissan Presage U30, the rear quarter window is held in place with urethane adhesive (bonded glass). Replacement requires removing the interior door trim or pillar trim (depending on whether the glass is fixed or part of the door), cutting out the old glass with a wire, preparing the opening, and bonding in the new glass. The job takes care: glass shards are dangerous, and improper bonding compromises the seal.
Part
- 🔩 Rear quarter window glass (the OE number depends on the left/right side and the opening type, so confirm it with your supplier for the U30 model, 1998-2003). Urethane windshield adhesive kit
Step by step
11 steps- Lower the front door windows 2-3 cm so that air pressure does not push out the freshly bonded glass when the doors are closed. Remove the rear door trim or the interior pillar trim (depending on the location of the glass): pop off the clips and remove the fasteners under the handles and in the recesses.
- Remove the glass weatherstrip from the inside.
- Put on safety glasses and heavy-duty gloves. Using a urethane cutting wire (steel or polyamide cord), cut through the urethane bead around the entire perimeter of the glass from inside the cabin, pulling the wire back and forth in a sawing motion along the frame. If the glass is cracked, tape it in a crisscross pattern to keep shards from falling.
- Carefully push the glass out (or pull it out from the outside with a suction cup). Set the glass aside, being careful with the sharp edges.
- Clean the old adhesive from the opening: trim away the thick layer with a blade or knife, then clean the surface down to bare metal or primer (without damaging the paint on the frame). Degrease the perimeter of the opening with solvent.
- Apply the primer from the urethane adhesive kit to the metal of the opening (a thin coat around the entire perimeter). Let it dry for 5-10 minutes.
- Lay the new glass on a flat surface with the outer side down. Apply urethane adhesive to the inner face of the glass around the perimeter in a triangular bead (8-12 mm high, with no gaps).
- Install the glass in the opening from the outside: set the top edge in first, then press evenly around the entire perimeter. Make sure the gaps are even on all sides and the glass does not touch the body metal.
- Secure the glass with masking tape at several points so it does not shift while the adhesive cures.
- Install the weatherstrip and trim in reverse order. Do not slam the doors for the first 2 hours (leave the front windows open 1-2 cm).
- Do not wash the car or drive at high speed for at least 24 hours, because the adhesive must cure fully (the time depends on temperature and humidity).
Common mistakes and warnings
- Always wear safety glasses and gloves, because glass shards cause deep cuts. Urethane adhesive and primer are highly flammable, so keep them away from flames and sparks and work in a well-ventilated area. Do not let the adhesive get on your skin or in your eyes. If you have no experience bonding glass, leave the job to an auto glass specialist, because improper installation leads to leaks and wind noise at speed.
