Toyota Wish 1.8 Valvematic (2ZR-FAE, 144 hp) (2009): Accessory Drive Belt Replacement
The belt on the 2ZR-FAE engine with the Valvematic system drives the alternator, the A/C compressor and the water pump. Belt tension is adjusted by moving the alternator. Replacement is recommended every 60-80 thousand km (37,000-50,000 miles) or when you hear a squeal on a cold start.
Part
- 🔩 6PK1230 belt (OE Toyota 90916-T2027 or aftermarket equivalents from Continental, Bando, Gates). If the alternator pulley is worn, use pulley 27415-0T060
Step by step
10 steps- Open the hood and let the engine cool down to ambient temperature.
- Inspect the current belt. Trace its route around the crankshaft (lower pulley), the A/C compressor, the water pump and the alternator. Take a photo so you can refer to it later.
- Loosen the upper alternator bolt (12 mm socket) completely, but do not remove it.
- Loosen the lower alternator bolt (14 mm socket) a few turns and leave it in the threads.
- Push the alternator back toward the engine block. The belt tension will drop. Take the old belt off the pulleys.
- Install the new 6PK1230 belt along the same route. Start with the crankshaft (lower pulley), then the A/C compressor, then under the water pump, and finish at the alternator.
- Pull the alternator forward, away from the engine, to tension the belt. Check the tension: take the belt at the middle of the longest span (between the alternator and the crankshaft). It should twist 90 degrees with noticeable resistance, but it should not feel like a guitar string.
- While holding the alternator in the tensioned position, tighten the upper 12 mm bolt fully, then the lower 14 mm bolt.
- Start the engine and listen. A continuous high-pitched squeal means the belt is too tight (loosen the bolts, move the alternator back slightly, then tighten again). Intermittent chirping means the belt is too loose (repeat steps 7-8 with more force).
- Let the engine idle for 2-3 minutes, then shut it off. Recheck the tightness of both alternator bolts.
Common mistakes and warnings
- If you hear grinding or cracking from the alternator area on a cold start, the cause may be a worn alternator overrunning pulley (part 27415-0T060) rather than the belt. The pulley smooths out belt motion when the engine shuts down. Replacing it requires removing the belt and using a 17 mm hex key. If you are not sure of the diagnosis, take the car to a repair shop to have the tensioner bearings and the condition of the pulley checked before you replace the belt.
