Toyota Wish 1ZZ-FE (2005): Rear Engine Mount Replacement
The rear engine mount on the Toyota Wish with the 1ZZ-FE engine is installed between the engine block and the subframe. Wear shows up as vibration at idle, jerking when the automatic transmission shifts, and clunking when pulling away. Replacement requires supporting the engine and access from underneath.
Part
- 🔩 Rear engine mount (OE part number for the 1ZZ-FE)
Step by step
11 steps- Put the car on a pit or lift, secure it with the parking brake, and place wheel chocks.
- Remove the left front wheel to get easier side access to the rear mount.
- Place a jack under the engine oil pan with a wooden block between them. Raise the engine slightly to take the load off the rear mount.
- Remove the upper bolts that secure the mount to the bracket on the engine (usually 2-3 bolts, 14 or 17 mm). Use an extension and a universal joint if needed.
- Remove the lower bolts that secure the mount to the subframe (2-4 bolts, 17 or 19 mm). Access is from below. You may need penetrating oil such as WD-40 for seized bolts.
- Remove the old mount. Sometimes you have to move the engine up and down with the jack to free the studs.
- Install the new mount in reverse order. Thread in all the bolts by hand, but do NOT fully tighten them yet.
- Lower the engine onto the new mount so that it settles into its natural position under its own weight.
- IMPORTANT: Move the automatic transmission selector to D (with the engine off), then tighten the mount bolts with a torque wrench. Tightening torque: 40-65 N·m (30-48 lb-ft) (confirm the exact value in the service manual). Tightening in P shifts the mount by about 1 cm and causes vibration after installation.
- Return the selector to P, remove the jack, install the wheel, and lower the car.
- Start the engine and check for vibration at idle and when shifting between D and R.
Common mistakes and warnings
- When tightening the center bolts of the mount, you MUST move the automatic transmission selector to D. This ensures the rubber element is centered correctly under load. Tightening in P causes the mount to sit skewed, and the vibration comes back. Do not place the jack directly against the oil pan without a wooden spacer, because you can dent the pan. If you are replacing all of the engine mounts, start with the rear and front mounts and do the side mounts last.
