Volkswagen Transporter T6: Removing the Complete Dashboard (Instrument Panel)
On the T6, the dashboard is mounted on a structural cross-car beam and contains wiring harnesses, HVAC ducts, the passenger airbag and a control unit. The exact step-by-step procedure for this body and trim level is not fully documented in open sources, so below is the general removal principle adapted for the T6. Tightening torques are not given because their values are not reliably known to me. For body bolts and beam mounting bolts, use the manufacturer's specified values.
Part
- 🔩 Consumables: a set of plastic trim clips and retainers, which often break during removal. If the dashboard is being removed for replacement, the complete dashboard assembly is ordered as a separate item, not as a trim piece. Its price varies widely by trim level and equipment, so check with your supplier

Step by step
16 steps- Preparation. Park the vehicle on a level surface, shut off the engine and remove the key. If the vehicle has keyless access, keep the key fob well away from the cabin. Write down the radio codes ahead of time and save any settings you need. After disconnecting the battery, let the vehicle sit without power for at least 10-15 minutes so the airbag system capacitors can discharge.
- Disconnect the negative battery terminal. Do not turn on the ignition or reconnect power until the dashboard is fully reassembled. The airbags (driver, passenger, and possibly side and knee airbags) are pyrotechnic. Do not drop the modules, do not apply power to them, and do not test the SRS circuit with a multimeter. If you have no experience working with SRS, it is better to leave this job to a repair shop.
- Remove the steering wheel. Remove the driver airbag (undo the fasteners on the sides or underneath the hub, disconnect the connector and its retainer), then disconnect the steering wheel button ribbon cables and the horn button. Before removal, mark the position of the wheel relative to the shaft; the front wheels must be pointing straight ahead. Always replace the steering wheel hub bolt with a new one during assembly, and tighten it to the specified value.
- Remove the column stalk switches, the clockspring ring (airbag ribbon cable), and the lower and upper steering column covers. Lock the clockspring in its center position (with tape) so it cannot rotate. Disconnect the connectors on the column modules and the ignition switch if it is in the way.
- Remove the instrument cluster: remove the trim surround above the cluster (it comes off by pulling forward against the clips), remove the mounting screws, and disconnect the connector. Label everything you disconnect.
- Remove the dashboard side end caps on both door sides (they are spring-loaded on clips), the left and right side air vents (defusers), and the front pillar (A-pillar) trim panels to free the side edges of the dashboard. If the vehicle has A-pillar airbags or curtains, do not damage them and do not disconnect them unless necessary.
- Remove the glove box: open it, remove the stops and dampers, and disconnect the light and the passenger airbag switch (the switch is released by gently pressing the retainer). Disconnect the passenger airbag module connector and remove the module itself if it is mounted on the dashboard. Store the airbag modules in a dry place with the cover facing up.
- Remove the center console: the gear selector (shift lever) if it is on the console, the trim frame and the radio or navigation unit, the climate control unit, the switches, and the cigarette lighter. Disconnect all connectors and the radio antenna cable, and label them with tape. Remove the lower console trims and the cup holders.
- Remove the lower side panels (driver and passenger knee areas), the lower dashboard trims and the footwell air ducts. Free the footwell air outlets, which attach to the lower part of the dashboard.
- Remove the front seats (optional, to make it easier to get the dashboard out), or at least slide them fully back. It is easier to pull the dashboard out through the door opening if the seats are raised and out of the way.
- Disconnect the wiring harnesses: the main connectors on the left and right sides of the dashboard (the fuse box on the left, the block on the left near the steering column), disconnect the body ground connections, antenna cables, and sensor connectors (sun sensor, windshield rain sensor, speaker), and the temperature sensor. Photograph and label every connection.
- Remove the windshield defroster ducts and the speaker (if it is in the dashboard), and detach the disconnected components from the trim. You do not need to open the cooling circuit for the heater. Do not disconnect the A/C refrigerant lines: refrigerant must only be discharged with special equipment.
- Locate the dashboard mounting points on the cross-car beam: Torx or hex bolts at the bottom (near the pillars), in the center on the beam, near the windshield (under the trim), at the edges by the A-pillars and by the center console. Remove each fastener in sequence and sort them into bags by zone, because the bolts come in different lengths. Do not remove the structural cross-car beam unless necessary, as it is part of the body structure.
- Before pulling the dashboard out, make sure no connectors, hoses or retainers have been overlooked. With two people, carefully pull the dashboard toward you into the cabin, lifting it slightly, and take it out through the door opening. Do not pull on the airbag and do not put load on the air ducts.
- Assembly is done in reverse order. Check that the harnesses are routed correctly and are not pinched between the dashboard and the body, and secure all clips. Tighten the fasteners to the manufacturer's specification. Install the airbags last, and install the steering wheel at the mark you made, using a new bolt.
- After assembly, reconnect the battery, turn on the ignition and make sure the airbag warning light on the cluster comes on and goes out after a few seconds. Check the operation of the lights, climate control, power windows, radio, ESP and the steering angle sensor. If there are SRS faults, steering angle faults or driver assistance faults, a scan tool diagnosis will be needed, and if necessary, calibration of the steering angle sensor.
Common mistakes and warnings
- This work involves the airbag system (SRS) and the steering, which are safety-critical systems. An assembly error can result in an airbag that does not work or deploys unexpectedly. If you have no experience, leave this job to a qualified repair shop. Do not connect the battery with SRS modules disconnected, and do not work with airbag initiators near heat sources or static electricity. All plastic clips on the T6 are thin, so do not use excessive force and work with trim tools. Label the instruments and connectors so you do not mix them up later.
