BMW 3 Series E46 3.0 M54 (1998): Water Pump Replacement
On the M54 3.0 engine, replacing the water pump every 80-90 thousand km is recommended as a preventive measure. Signs of failure include sudden overheating at idle with a metallic rattling noise, blue or green coolant leaking under the front of the car, and steam from under the hood. If the pump fails while driving, stop immediately and shut off the engine. Otherwise you risk cracking the cylinder head and damaging the gaskets.
Part
- 🔩 BMW 11517509985 (OE water pump with O-ring for the M54). Aftermarket equivalents: Hepu P509, Graf PA709. BMW Coolant (blue or green), 5 L (5.3 qt) of concentrate + 5 L (5.3 qt) of distilled water

Step by step
22 steps- Work only on a cold engine. Remove the expansion tank cap slowly and make sure there is no pressure.
- Place a drain pan under the radiator, open the drain plug on the lower radiator tank, and drain the coolant.
- Find the drain plug on the right side of the engine block (passenger side), open it, and drain the remaining coolant from the block.
- Loosen the 4 mounting bolts (10 mm) on the water pump pulley (do NOT remove them completely, only loosen them).
- Remove the fan clutch: hold the water pump pulley with the holder, then use the 32 mm wrench to unscrew the fan clutch nut (it has a left-hand thread, so turn it clockwise to loosen).
- Remove the accessory drive belt (alternator and auxiliaries). Note the belt routing around the pulleys (take a photo if needed).
- Fully remove the 4 pulley bolts and take off the water pump pulley.
- Disconnect the two cooling system hoses from the pump housing (upper and lower). Be ready for some leftover coolant.
- Unscrew the 4 bolts that secure the pump to the timing chain cover (no loosening torque is specified).
- Remove the old pump together with its O-ring. Clean the mating surface on the cover of any old sealant residue (do not scratch the metal).
- Install the new O-ring in the groove of the new pump and make sure it sits evenly.
- Fit the new pump in place and tighten the 4 mounting bolts evenly in a crisscross pattern to 10 N·m (7 lb-ft).
- Connect the hoses to the pump, install the pump pulley, and thread in the pulley bolts by hand (10 N·m (7 lb-ft), but do not fully tighten them yet).
- Install the accessory drive belt following the routing, and make sure it sits correctly on all the pulleys.
- Hold the pump pulley with the holder, install the fan clutch with the fan, and tighten the nut with the 32 mm wrench (left-hand thread, so turn counterclockwise to tighten, torque 25-30 N·m (18-22 lb-ft)).
- Fully tighten the 4 pulley bolts to 10 N·m (7 lb-ft) while holding the pulley.
- Close all drain plugs (radiator and block).
- If the expansion tank has an air bleed screw, open it. Fill the expansion tank with a 50/50 mix of coolant and distilled water up to the MAX mark (the system holds about 8.5-10 L (9.0-10.6 qt)).
- Watch the bleed screw. As soon as coolant flows out without bubbles, close the screw.
- Close the expansion tank cap, start the engine, and let it idle until it reaches operating temperature (the thermostat will open and the fan will switch on).
- Shut off the engine and let it cool for 15-20 minutes. Check the coolant level (it should be between MIN and MAX) and top up if needed.
- Inspect the pump area for leaks and check that all hose connections are tight.
Common mistakes and warnings
- If the pump fails while driving, stop immediately and shut off the engine. Continuing to drive will crack the cylinder head and damage the gaskets, leading to an expensive engine overhaul. Do not use cheap pumps with a plastic impeller. The OE BMW 11517509985 has a reinforced composite impeller. If the car has more than 100 thousand km, it is also recommended to replace the thermostat and the drive belt tensioner and idler pulleys at the same time as the pump.
