BMW 3 Series 2.0 Turbo B48 (2023): Spark Plug Inspection and Replacement

On the B48 engine, spark plugs are replaced every 60,000 km according to the BMW maintenance schedule. The procedure requires care, because the aluminum cylinder head is sensitive to overtightening and contamination.

Difficulty: Medium Time: 1-1.5 hours Steps: 13 Tools: Torx T30 bit, 3/8" extensions, 14 mm thin-wall 12-point spark plug socket, torque wrench, compressed air or shop vacuum, clean rags

Step by step

13 steps
  1. Let the engine cool down completely (at least 2 hours after driving). Removing spark plugs from a hot engine increases the risk of damaging the threads in the aluminum cylinder head.
  2. Remove the plastic engine cover by pulling it straight up. The clips release without tools.
  3. Disconnect the ignition coil connectors (4 total) by pressing the locking tab and pulling up.
  4. Remove the ignition coil mounting bolts (Torx T30) and pull the coils straight up, wiggling them gently.
  5. Blow out the spark plug wells with compressed air or vacuum them. Dirt must not fall into the cylinders.
  6. Unscrew the old spark plugs with the 14 mm thin-wall spark plug socket, using steady pressure without jerking. If a plug feels tight, stop and check whether the threads are seized.
  7. Inspect the old spark plugs. A normal insulator color is light brown or gray. Black carbon deposits or oil point to fuel system problems or issues with the cylinder-piston group (piston rings, cylinders and valve seals).
  8. Check the gap of the new spark plugs (factory setting is 0.9-1.0 mm for the B48). Adjustment is usually not needed, but verify it visually.
  9. Thread the new plugs in by hand until they seat. If a plug does not turn freely, stop and check the threads.
  10. Tighten the plugs with a torque wrench to 23 N·m (17 lb-ft) (tolerance ±3 N·m (±2 lb-ft)). Overtightening will damage the threads in the aluminum head.
  11. Reinstall the ignition coils and make sure they are fully seated in the wells.
  12. Tighten the coil bolts (Torx T30) to 8-10 N·m (6-7 lb-ft) and reconnect the connectors.
  13. Install the engine cover and start the engine. It should run smoothly, with no rough idle or misfires.

Common mistakes and warnings

  • Use only OE or recommended spark plugs. The wrong heat range or gap will cause knock (detonation) and can damage the pistons on a turbocharged engine. Do not apply anti-seize or lubricant to the spark plug threads. The B48 aluminum head does not need anti-seize compounds as long as the specified torque is followed.
