BMW X5 (4th generation, G05): Complete Steering Rack Replacement
The G05 uses an electromechanical steering rack with the electric motor mounted on the rack itself. The rack is mounted to the front subframe, so removing it usually requires lowering or partially disconnecting the subframe. The exact step-by-step procedure and torque values for this model are not documented in open sources. Below is the general work sequence. Check the tightening values against the manufacturer's specifications.

Step by step
13 steps- Preparation. Check the battery voltage and connect a battery charger or a stabilized power supply to the vehicle electrical system. Set the wheels straight ahead and lock the steering wheel in that position. Do not turn the steering wheel after the shaft is disconnected, or the airbag clockspring (spiral cable) will lose its centering.
- Raise the vehicle on the lift and remove the front wheels. Remove the engine bay and subframe undershield, along with any plastic underbody panels that block access.
- Disconnect the rack connectors: the power connector and the signal connector of the electric power steering. If the vehicle has Integral Active Steering, disconnect the additional connectors as well. Photograph the wiring routing and the locations of the retaining clips.
- Remove the lower mounting bolt of the steering shaft universal joint at the rack. Mark the position of the shaft relative to the rack pinion. The universal joint bolt is single-use, so replace it with a new one.
- Disconnect the tie rods from the steering knuckles. Remove the ball joint nuts of the tie rod ends and press out the studs with a puller. Do not hit the threads of the stud with a hammer.
- Disconnect from the subframe everything that prevents it from being lowered: the sway bar links, the lower control arms if necessary, brackets, exhaust system brackets, and wiring. On vehicles with air suspension and active suspension systems, watch the ride height sensors and their linkages.
- Support the subframe with a transmission jack or stands. Remove the subframe mounting hardware and lower the subframe far enough to remove the rack. The subframe hardware is mostly single-use, so use new hardware during assembly.
- Remove the bolts that secure the rack to the subframe and take the rack out, taking care not to damage the boots or the wiring harness. Compare the old and new racks: the version, length, mounting points, and connectors must match.
- Install the new rack on the subframe. Tighten the rack and subframe mounting bolts with a torque wrench in several stages, usually with an additional angle turn. Take the torque and angle values from the manufacturer's specifications. Tighten the wheel bolts to 140 N·m (103 lb-ft).
- Connect the steering shaft universal joint using the marks, tighten it with a new bolt, and reconnect the connectors. Install the tie rods and tighten the ball joint nuts to specification. Reinstall the removed suspension parts, the undershield, and the wheels. Tighten the wheel bolts in a crisscross pattern.
- Lower the vehicle and connect the diagnostic scanner. Perform coding and adaptation of the new rack, initialize the steering angle sensor, and clear the steering fault codes. Without this, errors, incorrect power assist, or incorrect operation of the driver assistance systems are possible.
- Perform a wheel alignment on an alignment rack. Set the steering wheel and wheels exactly to center.
- Take a test drive at low speed: check the steering effort, make sure there are no vibrations, check the steering wheel centering, and make sure there are no faults stored in the fault memory. Then check the tightness of the connections on the lift.
Common mistakes and warnings
- Steering is a safety system
- If you lack experience and diagnostic equipment, have the work done at a repair shop
- An incorrectly tightened shaft, tie rods, or subframe can lead to loss of control
- Also note: a service campaign was carried out on the steering rack for some 2019-2020 G05 vehicles (risk of pinion gear tooth failure)
- Before buying a new rack, check by VIN whether the campaign was performed, as the replacement may be covered under warranty
