Citroën C4 1.6 THP 150 (EP6DT) (2016): Timing Chain Replacement (Complete Kit)
The EP6DT engine uses a chain-driven timing system. On these engines the chain tends to stretch, especially with infrequent oil changes, as well as with a worn tensioner and guides. Symptoms: rattling on cold start, camshaft/crankshaft correlation fault codes, fluctuating idle speed, and the Check Engine light coming on. The job requires locking the shafts with special tools, otherwise the timing will be lost.
Part
- 🔩 Timing kit for EP6/EP6DT: timing chain, chain tensioner, guides and tensioner shoe, sprockets if worn. It is also recommended to replace the camshaft and crankshaft seals, the timing cover gasket or sealant, the crankshaft pulley bolt (single-use), the oil filter and the engine oil. Exact part numbers are not given to avoid errors: select parts by VIN and engine code

Step by step
13 steps- Preparation. Disconnect the negative battery terminal. Park the car on a level surface, raise the front end and remove the engine undercover. Drain the coolant if it interferes with access, and drain the engine oil.
- Access to the drive. Remove the air ducts and the air filter housing, as well as everything that blocks access to the timing cover: the accessory drive belt (release the tensioner, locking its position), the right front wheel and inner fender liner, and the coolant expansion tank if necessary. Secure the engine with a safety support and remove the right engine mount with its bracket if it blocks access to the cover.
- Set the engine to TDC on cylinder 1 by turning the crankshaft in its normal direction of rotation using the pulley bolt. Insert the crankshaft locking pin into the timing hole and lock the camshafts with the tools from the set. Do not turn the crankshaft against its direction of rotation while the tensioner is removed.
- Loosen and remove the crankshaft pulley bolt (it may be very tight, so keep the pulley from turning). Remove the pulley.
- Remove the timing cover: undo all the bolts around the perimeter and carefully separate the cover from the sealant without damaging the mating surfaces. Before removal, unbolt and move aside any sensors and wiring harnesses that interfere with removal.
- Mark the chain and sprockets (with paint or a marker) and photograph the layout. Release the pressure in the tensioner following the manufacturer's procedure and remove the tensioner.
- Remove the guides and the tensioner shoe. Take the old chain off the sprockets. Inspect the sprockets and replace them if the teeth are noticeably worn. Check the fit and condition of the VVT gears on the camshafts.
- Install the new chain and all new guides. Make sure the chain marks line up with the sprocket marks and the tooth positions. Install the new tensioner and release its lock as described in the instructions in the package.
- Check that the shaft locking tools are still in place, then remove them. Turn the crankshaft two full turns in its normal direction of rotation, insert the locking tools again and make sure the marks line up. If they do not, remove the chain and repeat the installation.
- Replace the crankshaft and camshaft seals, clean the mating surfaces of old sealant and apply a new layer (thin and even, with no excess, otherwise the excess will get into the oil passages). Install the cover and tighten the bolts evenly in a crisscross pattern with a torque wrench. Use the torque specified by the manufacturer for this model.
- Install the crankshaft pulley with a new bolt and tighten it in two stages: first to the specified torque, then by the specified angle. Check the exact torque and angle values for the EP6DT against the manufacturer's data. Do not guess them.
- Reassemble everything in reverse order: engine mount, accessory drive belt, air ducts, undercover. Fill with fresh oil and install a new oil filter. If you drained the coolant, fill with new coolant and bleed the air from the system.
- Start the engine and let it run for 5-10 minutes. Listen for chain noise and check for oil and coolant leaks. There should be no fault codes. If necessary, clear the codes with a diagnostic scan tool.
Common mistakes and warnings
- Incorrect valve timing or an incorrectly installed chain will cause the pistons to hit the valves and lead to expensive engine repairs. Do not turn the engine over without the locking tools after the tensioner has been removed, and do not rely on marks "found by eye." If you do not have the special tools and experience, it is better to leave the job to a repair shop. Debris and sealant that get into the oil passages also shorten the life of the new timing drive, so pay close attention to cleanliness.
