Datsun Mi-do (1st generation): Front Bumper Removal and Installation

The Mi-do is built on the Lada Granta family platform, so the front bumper is held on by screws and clips: at the top along the upper support panel, in the wheel arches, and at the bottom to the engine skid plate. The job is easier with two people, so you don't scratch the fender or the paint. The manufacturer does not specify torque values for the bumper fasteners, so tighten them without overtightening.

  • Phillips PH2 screwdriver
  • Torx screwdriver or socket (T20-T25, depending on the fastener)
  • 8 mm and 10 mm sockets with ratchet
  • flat-blade screwdriver or trim clip remover
  • jack and jack stands (or a pit)
  • pry tool
  • container for fasteners

Step by step

12 steps
  1. Park the vehicle on level ground, turn off the engine, and set the parking brake. Open the hood. If the bumper has fog lights or sensors, you can also disconnect the negative battery terminal.
  2. Remove the engine skid plate (if installed) by undoing the fasteners around its perimeter. This gives access to the lower bumper screws.
  3. Remove the upper screws under the hood along the top edge of the bumper, along the radiator support panel. Some of the fasteners are hidden by a decorative cover or a seal: carefully fold them back.
  4. Turn the steering wheel and remove the fasteners at the front of the fender liners. Jack up the vehicle or use a pit. Remove the screws that hold the side edges of the bumper to the fender liners on both sides.
  5. From underneath, remove the screws or bolts that hold the bumper to the bracket or the engine skid plate. Check the number and location against your vehicle, as they may differ between trim levels.
  6. If fog lights are fitted, disconnect the wiring connectors from them. If there is a headlight washer or sensors, unplug their connectors. Press the connector latch, and don't pull on the wires.
  7. Have a helper hold the bumper. Release the side guides (on both sides, the bumper sits in slots in the fenders). Carefully pull the side edges of the bumper toward you and forward, then lift off the whole bumper.
  8. Lay the bumper face down on a soft cloth or cardboard. If needed, move the fog lights, grille, reinforcement beam, tow hook cover, and fasteners to the new bumper.
  9. Before installing, inspect the brackets and guides. Replace any broken clips, plugs, and retainers.
  10. Install in reverse order: insert the side edges into the fender guides, connect the connectors, start all the screws by hand at the top, in the arches, and at the bottom, and only then tighten them evenly.
  11. Check the gaps between the bumper, hood, fenders, and headlights: they should be the same on the left and right. If necessary, loosen the fasteners and adjust the position.
  12. Install the engine skid plate and reconnect the battery terminal. Check that the fog lights work.

Common mistakes and warnings

  • Tighten all screws into plastic smoothly and without force, or you will strip the threads in the mounting points
  • Don't pull hard on the bumper edges during removal: cold plastic is brittle in winter and cracks, so it is better to warm up the work area
  • If you lift the vehicle with a jack, always place it on jack stands, and never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack
