Hyundai Sonata (7th generation, LF) 2.4 GDI (2019): Radiator Fan Replacement
The cooling fan on the Sonata LF with the 2.4 GDI is mounted on a shroud behind the radiator and is run by its own control module. Replace it if the bearing is noisy, the fan is seized, the fan does not turn on, or the fan blades are cracked. The exact procedure for this model is not documented in detail in publicly available sources, so the general procedure is described below. Before replacing it, check the fuses, relays and fan connector, because the problem is often there.

Step by step
12 steps- Turn off the engine and let it cool down completely. Open the hood. Disconnect the negative battery terminal and wait 5-10 minutes.
- Remove the engine cover if it is in the way. Remove the upper plastic radiator cover (air duct). It is held by plastic clips and 2-4 bolts.
- Remove the air intake duct or intake hose if it blocks the top of the shroud. To do this, loosen the clamp and unclip the MAF sensor connector.
- Disconnect the fan electrical connector and the control module connector on the shroud. Press the locking tab and do not pull on the wires. Free the wiring harness from the holders on the shroud.
- If they are in the way, loosen the clamps and move the radiator hoses aside. This is not always necessary. If you have to remove the hoses, place a drain pan under them for the coolant, and after reassembly top up the coolant and bleed the system.
- Remove the lower engine undercover if you need access from below. Check the lower mounting points of the shroud: on many vehicles the shroud is secured at the bottom by clips or lower pins in the radiator.
- Remove the bolts that secure the shroud to the radiator (usually 2-4 bolts at the top) and release the lower clips. Lift the shroud and carefully guide it up and out. Do not damage the radiator fins or the A/C condenser with the fan blades. Do not disconnect the A/C hoses.
- Place the shroud on a workbench. If you are replacing only the motor, remove the center nut or retainer from the fan blade, then the fan blade, and unbolt the motor from the shroud. If you are replacing the whole assembly, this step is not needed.
- Compare the new part with the old one: number of blades, shroud shape, connector. Check that the fan blade spins freely.
- Install the new shroud with fan in reverse order. Seat the lower clips and pins into the radiator until they lock. Tighten the mounting bolts without overtightening; the torque is low, about 4-8 N·m (3-6 lb-ft) (check the exact value in the manufacturer's service manual). The plastic strips easily.
- Connect the fan and control module connectors and route the harness into its holders. Install the air duct, hoses, radiator cover and engine undercover. Reconnect the negative battery terminal.
- Test operation. Start the engine and turn on the A/C, and the fan should come on. Then warm the engine up to operating temperature and make sure the fan turns on and the temperature stays normal. If you drained coolant, check the level after the engine cools and top up if necessary. Read the OBD codes if the Check Engine light is on.
Common mistakes and warnings
- The fan can start on its own even with the engine off, so do not put your hands near the fan blades until the battery is disconnected
- Do not open the coolant reservoir cap on a hot engine: hot coolant may spray out
- If the fan does not turn on after replacement, check the fuses, the power supply and ground of the control module, as well as the A/C pressure sensor and the temperature sensors
- If you have no experience, it is better to leave diagnostics to a repair shop
