Jaguar XF (1st generation): Door Panel Removal and Installation

A step-by-step procedure specific to this model is not documented in publicly available service materials, so below is the general principle that applies to the XF X250. The panel is held by hidden screws and plastic clips around the perimeter, and it houses the window and mirror switch pack, speakers, and lighting. Work carefully: the clips on an older panel are brittle, and the electrical connectors must be disconnected before the panel is fully pulled away from the door.

Difficulty: Medium Time: 40-90 minutes per door Steps: 12 Tools: Plastic trim removal tool set, Torx and Phillips screwdrivers, thin flat-blade screwdriver, soft cloth or masking tape, container for fasteners

Part

  • 🔩 Not required. A set of new plastic door panel clips is recommended (buy by the name and type for your door), plus a repair kit for broken mounting points if needed

Step by step

12 steps
  1. Turn off the engine and remove the key or keyless fob from the cabin. For safety, disconnect the negative battery terminal (it is in the trunk) and wait 5-10 minutes for the airbag capacitors to discharge. After reconnecting, the windows may need to be reinitialized and the clock reset, so raise the window fully first.
  2. Inspect the door panel and locate the fasteners. They are usually hidden behind decorative covers: in the door pull recess, under the door release handle, near the window switch pack, and in the lower part of the panel. Pry the covers off with a thin plastic trim tool through a cloth so you don't scratch the trim.
  3. Remove all the screws you find and sort them separately by location. Their length and type may differ.
  4. If the door has decorative inserts or a panel with a switch pack, remove them with a trim tool, prying from one edge. First disconnect the connectors from the window and mirror switch pack; do not pull on the wires.
  5. Pry the panel off around the perimeter with a plastic trim tool, starting at a lower corner. The clips should release with a distinct click. Apply even pressure next to each clip; do not yank the panel off by hand.
  6. Once the panel has come free on the sides and bottom, lift it upward to release it from the top edge above the glass (the panel hangs on the window seal or guides).
  7. Carefully move the panel away from the door without pulling it all the way off. Disconnect the door release cable or rod (remove the end from the lever or stud) and all electrical connectors: speakers, lighting, switches, sensors. Remember the location of each.
  8. Remove the panel and place it on a soft cloth. Inspect the plastic sheet (water shield) and be careful not to damage it. If you need to work on the mechanisms inside the door, carefully peel the sheet back, then put it back and re-seal it.
  9. Installation is the reverse of removal. First connect the connectors and the door release cable, check that the window regulator and lock work with the battery connected, and only then secure the panel.
  10. Hang the panel on the top edge, align all the clips with their holes, and press around the perimeter with your palm until they click. Replace any broken clips with new ones.
  11. Install the screws and covers. Torque values for door panel screws are not specified as structural fasteners: tighten them without force so you don't strip the plastic bosses.
  12. Check the operation of the window, lock, inside handle, mirror, and speaker. If necessary, reinitialize the window (raise it fully and hold the switch for 2-3 seconds).

Common mistakes and warnings

  • The doors may contain crash sensors (the side airbags are in the seats, but impact sensors can be in the door), so do not strike the panel hard and do not work with the ignition on. Do not leave connectors hanging by their wires and do not pull on them. Plastic clips often break during removal, so buy spares in advance. If you are not confident working with the door electrical system, or if the airbag diagnostics have been triggered (the SRS indicator is on), take the car to a repair shop.
