Lada 2107 (Gen I): Replacing the Steering Column Switch Assembly

On the "Seven," all the stalks are in a single assembly that is clamped to the steering column under the steering wheel. Typical signs of wear: the turn signals don't work or stick, the high or low beams cut out, or the contacts burn. To replace it, you need to remove the steering wheel and the lower column cover. The 1.5 engine does not affect the procedure.

Difficulty: Medium Time: 1-1.5 hours Steps: 11 Tools: Phillips screwdriver, flat-head screwdriver, 24 mm socket with a ratchet handle, 10 mm socket or wrench (for the switch assembly clamp), pry tool, marker, multimeter or test lamp (for checking)

Part

  • 🔩 VAZ-2105/2107 steering column switch assembly, complete (three stalks: turn signals and high/low beam, exterior lights, wipers and washer). The part number depends on the trim level and the type of assembly, so I'm not listing one. If only one stalk is faulty, you can buy a separate switch, but in practice it is simpler and more reliable to replace the whole assembly

Step by step

11 steps
  1. Shut off the engine and disconnect the negative terminal from the battery. Point the wheels straight ahead. Do not turn the steering wheel while it is removed, or the neutral position of the contact assembly will be lost.
  2. Pry off and remove the decorative cap (cover) in the center of the steering wheel. Remove the retaining screws, if there are any.
  3. Use a marker to make a mark on the hub and the shaft so you can reinstall the steering wheel in the same spline position.
  4. Remove the steering wheel nut with a 24 mm socket while holding the steering wheel. Rock the wheel and pull it off the shaft. If it is stuck, pull it toward you while tapping the underside of the rim with the palms of your hands. Do not hit the hub with a hammer.
  5. Remove the screws and take off the upper and lower plastic steering column covers. There are usually 3 screws, removed with a Phillips screwdriver, but the number may differ depending on the model year.
  6. Locate the wiring connectors on the switch assembly and carefully disconnect them. Before that, take a photo or note the connector positions so you don't mix them up. The connectors have different shapes, but they still need to be removed carefully, because the latches are fragile.
  7. Loosen the clamp holding the assembly to the column (a 10 mm bolt or screw, or a slotted one) and, if necessary, remove the 2 self-tapping screws that hold the assembly against the bracket. Slide the assembly up off the shaft.
  8. Install the new assembly in the same position as the old one. Its height should leave a small gap between the assembly and the steering wheel hub so the wheel doesn't rub against the stalks. Tighten the clamp.
  9. Connect the connectors and test the assembly before reassembly. Reconnect the battery terminal, turn the ignition on, and check all functions: left and right turn signals, hazard lights, parking lights, low and high beams, high-beam flash, wipers, and washer.
  10. If everything works, disconnect the terminal again. Install the steering wheel on the marks and tighten the nut (tightening torque is approximately 30-50 N·m (22-37 lb-ft); check the exact value in the manufacturer's specifications). Reinstall the covers and the cap.
  11. Check that the turn signals return to the neutral position automatically after completing a turn. If they don't, the assembly is mounted too high or too low relative to the washer (cancel cam) that returns the stalk, or the steering wheel is not aligned with the marks.

Common mistakes and warnings

  • Do not leave the battery connected: airbag circuits are not located in the steering column on every car, but a short between wires in the column can blow fuses. Do not tighten the steering wheel nut by feel, and do not forget the lock washer, if there is one. Be sure to check that the turn signals and lights work before you drive, because your safety depends on it. If you have no experience working on a steering column, take the car to a repair shop.
