Lada 2107 1.5 (1996): Timing Chain Replacement
The VAZ 2107 (Lada Riva) with the 1.5 L carbureted engine uses a double-row roller timing chain with a service life of 100,000-120,000 km. Replacement requires partial disassembly of the front of the engine, and the ignition timing must be adjusted after installation.
Part
- 🔩 Timing chain 2103-1006040 (double-row, 116 links), chain tensioner 2101-1006060, tensioner shoe 2101-1006090, chain damper 2101-1006100, front engine cover gasket
Step by step
15 steps- Drain the coolant from the radiator, then remove the radiator and the radiator grille to gain access to the front engine cover.
- Remove the valve cover (8 10 mm nuts) and the engine skid plate from underneath.
- Turn the crankshaft with a 36 mm wrench until the mark on the crankshaft pulley lines up with the mark on the front cover, and the mark on the camshaft sprocket lines up with the boss on the bearing housing.
- Loosen the center nut of the crankshaft pulley (36 mm wrench). If necessary, hold the crankshaft by putting the transmission in 4th gear and applying the parking brake.
- Remove the crankshaft pulley, undo the 9 nuts on the front and the 3 bolts on the bottom of the front engine cover, and remove the cover.
- Remove the cotter (locking) tab from the camshaft sprocket bolt with a flat-blade screwdriver, unscrew the bolt with a 17 mm wrench, and remove the sprocket.
- Remove the chain damper (2 10 mm bolts), the tensioner shoe and the chain tensioner.
- Remove the old chain together with the intermediate shaft and oil pump sprockets, and inspect the sprockets for tooth wear.
- Fit the new chain onto the crankshaft sprocket, then onto the intermediate shaft and oil pump sprockets, and install the camshaft sprocket, aligning the marks.
- Install the new tensioner shoe, damper and chain tensioner (the tensioner will tension the chain automatically when the engine is started).
- Turn the crankshaft by hand through two full revolutions and make sure all the timing marks line up.
- Install the front engine cover with a new gasket and tighten the bolts and nuts evenly in a crisscross pattern.
- Install the crankshaft pulley and tighten the center nut to 100-120 N·m (74-89 lb-ft).
- Install the valve cover with a new gasket, reinstall the radiator and refill with coolant.
- After reassembly, adjust the ignition timing (the distributor was removed during the chain replacement) and check for oil and coolant leaks.
Common mistakes and warnings
- The 1996 VAZ 2107 1.5 L engine is carbureted and has a chain-driven timing system. Always align the marks when installing the chain, otherwise the engine will not start or the valves may be damaged. Ignition timing adjustment is required after the chain replacement because the distributor drive gear was removed.
