Lada Largus 1.6 16V VAZ-21129 (2014): Valve Stem Seal Replacement
Replace the seals when they are worn: bluish smoke at startup and after lifting off the throttle, oil consumption, oily deposits on the spark plugs. The VAZ-21129 engine is an interference engine (valves bend if the timing belt breaks), so handle the timing carefully. There are two methods: with the camshafts removed, and replacing the seals in place without removing the camshafts, holding the valve up with compressed air or a rope. The second is faster but requires experience.
Parts
2- 🔩 Valve stem seal set for 16 valves (8 intake + 8 exhaust; on the 21129, intake and exhaust seals may differ in color and size, so get a set made specifically for 16-valve VAZ engines, for example Victor Reinz, Elring, Goetze, or genuine Lada). Related parts that are usually replaced at the same time: valve cover gasket, spark plug well seals, timing belt with rollers (tensioner and idler), camshaft oil seals, coolant if needed. Step by step
15 steps- Disconnect the negative battery terminal. Drain some of the coolant if hoses are in the way. Remove the decorative engine cover and the air duct with the air filter housing.
- Remove the spark plug wires or ignition coils, disconnect the sensor connectors and the wiring harness on the valve cover. Remove the spark plugs; you will need the holes for access to the cylinders.
- Disconnect the crankcase ventilation hoses. Remove the valve cover and clean the mating surfaces of old sealant and oil.
- Set the piston of cylinder 1 to TDC on the compression stroke using the marks: the crankshaft pulley mark on the guard or timing cover, and the camshaft pulley marks on the rear cover. To do this, remove the right wheel and the fender liner; you need access to the crankshaft pulley bolt.
- Remove the upper timing belt cover. Loosen the tensioner roller and take the belt off the camshaft pulleys. Lock the pulleys against turning, carefully unbolt them, then remove them. It is better to replace the belt with a new one, along with the rollers.
- Evenly loosen the camshaft bearing cap bolts, in the reverse of the tightening sequence. Remove the caps, noting their position and orientation: they are not interchangeable. Take out the camshafts together with the oil seals. Keep the followers and adjusting shims strictly in their original places, without mixing them up. If this version has hydraulic lifters, handle them the same way, without turning them over.
- Cover the area over the oil drain passages with a rag so a keeper cannot fall into the cylinder head.
- For each valve: place the valve spring compressor on the spring retainer and compress the spring, then remove the keepers with a magnet or tweezers. Slowly release the compressor and remove the retainer and spring. The piston in that cylinder should be in the lower part of its stroke, and the valve must be held in the up position with compressed air through the spark plug hole (a special adapter with a compressor) or with a rope fed into the cylinder through the spark plug well. Without support, the valve will drop into the combustion chamber.
- Remove the old seal with a seal remover or carefully with long-nose pliers. Inspect the valve stem: there must be no wear, scoring or carbon buildup. Wipe it with a clean cloth.
- Lubricate the stem and the inner lip of the new seal with engine oil. Slide the seal onto the stem without damaging the lip, using the protective cap or a plastic film. Press it on with the drift until it seats fully on the valve guide.
- Install the spring and retainer, compress them with the compressor and install the keepers. Make sure they have seated in the groove by lightly tapping the end of the stem with a hammer through a drift or the end of the compressor. Check the other valves the same way. Move on to the next valve, making sure not to mix up the springs between cylinders.
- Reassemble in reverse order: lubricate the camshaft journals and lobes with oil, install the camshafts, fit new oil seals, apply a thin layer of sealant to the bearing cap mating surfaces (where specified), and tighten the cap bolts in the proper sequence in two or three stages. The torque for the camshaft cap bolts is low (about 8-12 N·m (6-9 lb-ft); check the exact value against the VAZ specification for the 21129), while the camshaft pulley bolts are much higher, per specification.
- Install the camshaft pulleys and the timing belt according to the marks, and adjust its tension. Turn the crankshaft two full turns by hand using the pulley bolt and check that the marks line up. The belt must not be overtightened.
- Install the valve cover with a new gasket and new spark plug well seals, and tighten the bolts evenly to a low torque (about 8-10 N·m (6-7 lb-ft), per specification). Install the spark plugs, coils, hoses, air duct and all connectors.
- Reconnect the battery, top up the coolant if you drained it, and check the oil level. Start the engine and check for oil leaks and fault codes. For the first 200-300 km, watch oil consumption and exhaust smoke: the new seals take a while to bed in.
Common mistakes and warnings
- The VAZ-21129 is an interference engine: if the timing marks are wrong or the belt breaks, the valves hit the pistons. Before the first start, turn the crankshaft by hand through two full turns and make sure it rotates freely. If the seals are worn but the valve stems and guides are also worn, new seals alone will not fix the problem and the cylinder head needs repair. If you have no experience with a valve spring compressor and valve timing, it is better to go to a repair shop.
