Luxgen Luxgen7 SUV 2.2 Turbo (2014): Throttle Body Cleaning

On the 2.2 turbo engine (G22T), the throttle is electronic and driven by an electric motor. Carbon deposits and an oil film from the crankcase ventilation system build up around the edge of the throttle plate and cause fluctuating idle speed, hesitation when pulling away, and rough idle. The exact procedure for this specific model is not documented in publicly available service materials, so what follows is the general principle for electronic throttle bodies. Check the fastener torque against the manufacturer's specifications.

Difficulty: Medium Time: 40-60 minutes Steps: 11 Tools: Socket set and ratchet (usually 10-12 mm), screwdrivers, throttle body cleaner (spray), clean lint-free rags, soft brush, socket wrench or hose clamp tool, marker or masking tape for labeling hoses

Part

  • 🔩 Throttle body gasket or O-ring (if damaged during removal), throttle body cleaner (not carburetor cleaner; safe for electronic throttles). The gasket part number for this engine is not confirmed, so only the part type is given

Step by step

11 steps
  1. Shut off the engine and let it cool down. Disconnect the negative battery terminal and wait 5-10 minutes. Note that the engine control unit's learned values will be reset, and the idle may be unstable after reassembly.
  2. Locate the throttle body. It sits in the intake tract between the air filter with its duct and the intake manifold, and on the turbo engine it is located after the intercooler. Inspect the inlet duct for oil: oil present indicates wear in the crankcase ventilation system or the turbocharger.
  3. Disconnect the throttle sensor connector by pressing the locking tab. Do not pull on the wires.
  4. Loosen the clamps and remove the air duct. If ventilation hoses or vacuum lines are in the way, label them with a marker or tape so you can put them back in the right places.
  5. It is best to remove the throttle body from the manifold: undo the mounting bolts or nuts (usually 4) and carefully remove the unit. Note the position of the gasket or O-ring. If the throttle body has coolant hoses, do not disconnect them unless necessary, to avoid losing coolant. The unit can be left hanging by the hoses and cleaned in place.
  6. Do not force the throttle plate by hand and do not push it fully open with your finger. The electronic actuator is designed to move under control of the engine control unit, and force can damage the gear drive. If you need to open it, do so gently and only through a small angle, or have a helper turn the ignition on without starting the engine, when the control unit opens the plate slightly by itself (on some models the plate is returned to closed by a spring).
  7. Apply the cleaner to a rag (do not pour it onto the electric actuator or the connector) and wipe the throttle plate on both sides, its edge and the bore wall. Remove deposits on the edge with a soft brush. Do not use metal scrapers or abrasives.
  8. Do not let liquid get onto the actuator motor or the sensors. Let the cleaner evaporate for 5-10 minutes. Check that the plate returns freely to the closed position under spring pressure.
  9. Reinstall the throttle body with a clean gasket or an undamaged O-ring. Tighten the fasteners in a crisscross pattern to the specified torque (for bolts of this size, usually in the range of 8-12 N·m (6-9 lb-ft)). Reconnect the connector, vacuum lines and air duct, and tighten the clamps.
  10. Reconnect the battery and turn the ignition on for 10-15 seconds without starting the engine, so the control unit can recognize the throttle. Then start the engine and let it idle for 10-15 minutes with no load until it reaches operating temperature. The idle speed may be unstable while the control unit relearns.
  11. If the idle still fluctuates afterward, the Check Engine light comes on, or the engine stalls, perform a throttle relearn with a diagnostic scan tool. For this model, that may require dealer-level or specialized diagnostic equipment.

Common mistakes and warnings

  • Do not spray cleaner into the intake of a running turbo engine: liquid can get into the turbocharger and cylinders. Do not use carb cleaner or aggressive solvents, as they damage the throttle plate coating and the actuator plastic. If the throttle fault code does not clear after cleaning, the throttle body itself may be faulty. In that case, take the vehicle to a repair shop if you have no experience working with electronic systems.
