Luxgen Luxgen7 SUV 2.2 Turbo (2011): Alternator Replacement

On the Luxgen7 SUV with the 2.2 Turbo engine, the alternator is located on the right side (passenger side in left-hand-drive markets, driver side in right-hand-drive markets, as viewed in the direction of travel) in the lower part of the engine bay. Access is difficult because of the transverse engine layout and the turbocharger, so you will need to raise the front of the car to work from below.

Difficulty: Medium Time: 2-3 hours Steps: 13 Tools: 10-19 mm socket set, ratchet, 12/14/17 mm box-end wrenches, serpentine belt pry bar or 3/8" drive belt tensioner wrench, jack and jack stands, flashlight

Part

  • 🔩 150 A alternator for the Luxgen 2.2 MEFI (G22TG) engine. Verify fitment for the turbocharged engine

Step by step

13 steps
  1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal and wait 5 minutes for the system capacitors to discharge.
  2. Raise the front of the vehicle with a jack, support it on jack stands, then remove the right front wheel and the plastic wheel well liner (6-8 screws or clips).
  3. From below, locate the alternator. It is mounted on the engine bracket on the right side, and the serpentine belt runs to it from the crankshaft through the tensioner pulleys.
  4. Take a photo of the belt routing (if there is no routing diagram on the vehicle body). Release the belt tensioner: insert a 3/8" drive wrench or pry bar into the square hole of the tensioner, turn it counterclockwise (this relieves belt tension), and slip the belt off the alternator pulley.
  5. Disconnect the alternator power cable: remove the 12 mm nut on the rear cover and take off the terminal. Press the release tab of the control connector (usually a small button on the side) and pull the connector off.
  6. Remove the upper alternator mounting bolt (14 or 17 mm socket, depending on the bracket), then the lower bolt or stud nut (usually a 17 mm socket). Support the alternator by hand, as it may fall.
  7. Remove the alternator downward through the wheel well, or upward (if part of the air intake has been removed). Check the condition of the bracket and the mounting threads.
  8. Install the new alternator and start the bolts by hand to avoid cross-threading. Tighten the upper and lower bolts to 25-35 N·m (18-26 lb-ft) (check the exact value in the manufacturer's specifications).
  9. Reconnect the power cable and the control connector, and tighten the power cable nut to 8-12 N·m (6-9 lb-ft).
  10. Fit the serpentine belt onto the pulleys following the routing diagram, leaving the tensioner pulley for last. Rotate the tensioner, slip the belt onto its pulley, and slowly release the tensioner. It will press against the belt on its own.
  11. Turn the crankshaft by hand 2 full revolutions (using a wrench on the crankshaft pulley bolt) and make sure the belt does not slip off and is not twisted.
  12. Install the wheel well liner and the wheel, then lower the car. Reconnect the battery terminal.
  13. Start the engine and measure the battery voltage with a multimeter. It should be 13.5-14.5 V at idle. Turn on the headlights and climate control. The voltage should not drop below 13.0 V.

Common mistakes and warnings

  • Make sure the new alternator is rated at least 150 A. The turbocharged 2.2 Turbo engine needs stable electrical power for the control unit, the high-pressure fuel pump and the ignition system. When installing the belt, keep oil off its surface and wipe the pulleys with a clean rag. If the belt tensioner knocks or does not hold tension, replace it together with the alternator.
