Mercedes-Benz Vito (W639, 2nd generation): Cabin Air Filter Replacement
On the W639, the cabin filters sit in the heater housing behind the glove box on the passenger side. The glove box has to be removed completely to reach them. The recommended replacement interval is once a year or about 10,000-15,000 km (6,000-9,000 mi), and more often in dusty conditions. The procedure does not depend on the engine.
Part
- 🔩 Cabin air filter for the Vito W639. Catalogs list it as a set of two flat filters (the activated carbon version is preferred). Aftermarket equivalents: Mann-Filter, Filtron, Bosch, Sakura. The OE number is not given to avoid an error: sets may differ between trim levels (with and without A/C)

Step by step
9 steps- Shut off the engine and turn the ignition off. Empty the glove box.
- Open the glove box lid and remove the mounting screws around the perimeter and inside the recess (according to the data found, there are about 8). Pry out the plastic plugs carefully with a flat-blade screwdriver.
- Disconnect the connectors for the lighting and any other consumers, if your trim level has them, and remove the glove box completely.
- Behind it, find the filter covers or cassettes inserted in the heater housing. Release the clips and carefully pull out the cassettes or filters without spilling dirt into the housing.
- Note how the old filter was installed: the airflow direction arrows on the housing must match when you install the new one. Usually the arrow points toward the heater blower.
- Vacuum the seats and the ventilation duct, and remove any leaves and debris.
- Install the new filters according to the airflow arrows, pushing them all the way in without any skew. Close the covers and snap the clips into place.
- Install the glove box, reconnect the connectors, tighten the screws and insert the plugs.
- Run the heater blower on all speeds and check the airflow and that there are no unusual noises.
Common mistakes and warnings
- If a smell or weak airflow appears after replacement, check that the filters are oriented correctly and seated properly in the housing. If you disconnected any connectors near the glove box and the vehicle has a passenger airbag, do not touch the airbag's connectors or mounts. If in doubt, contact a repair shop. The exact screw locations and the cassette design may differ slightly between trim levels, so work carefully and do not apply excessive force to the plastic clips.
