Nissan Avenir (2nd generation, W11): Trunk Lid Gas Strut Replacement

The trunk lid gas struts on the Nissan Avenir W11 lose pressure over time and stop holding the lid open. The replacement needs no special tools, but the mounting ends of the new struts need a small modification to fit the factory mounting points.

Difficulty: Easy Time: 40-60 minutes Steps: 7 Tools: 10/12 mm wrenches (for the mounting bolts), flat-blade screwdriver, hacksaw or angle grinder, drill with a 6 mm bit, support for the trunk lid (wooden block or a helper)

Part

  • 🔩 Patron PGS1207QO (2 pcs, 480 N force, 678 mm length). Alternatives: gas struts from the GAZ-2217 Barguzin (700 N) or VAZ-2111 (430 N). You will also need M6 nuts (2 pcs)

Step by step

7 steps
  1. Open the trunk and put a wooden block under the lid, or have a helper hold it. The old struts may not support its weight.
  2. Remove the old strut: unscrew the 2 upper bolts that hold the bracket to the lid, then unscrew the lower bolt with the ball stud at the base of the body.
  3. If the ball stud will not come out of the strut socket, pry it with a flat-blade screwdriver. You can also place a lever (for example, a ratchet) between the bolt and the mount, then pull the strut toward you.
  4. The new Patron struts come with Ford Transit-style end fittings, so you need to adapt them. Cut off the factory bracket on the lower end of the strut with a hacksaw or angle grinder and drill a 6 mm hole. Then install an M6 nut (you can weld it for extra security). The upper bracket usually fits without modification.
  5. Install the new strut in reverse order. First fit the strut's lower socket onto the ball stud, then bolt the upper bracket to the trunk lid with two bolts.
  6. Repeat the procedure for the second strut.
  7. Check operation: the lid should open smoothly and stay firmly in the raised position. When closing, it should lower slowly without slamming.

Common mistakes and warnings

  • When the lid is fully open, the factory stop mechanism may engage and slow the movement slightly. This is normal. Do not install struts with too much force (above 700 N), because the lid hinges may deform. If the lid has a closing assist or heavy sound insulation, choose struts closer to the upper end of the 480-700 N range.
