Nissan Patrol (Y61): Replacing the Climate Control Unit and Center Console Switches

The climate control panel in the Y61 sits in the center of the dash, together with the radio and the neighboring switch blocks. To replace it, you need to remove the decorative center panel, unscrew the unit and disconnect the connectors. The exact layout of screws and clips depends on the trim level (radio, number of switches), so go by what you see after removing the trim pieces.

Step by step

13 steps
  1. Turn off the engine, remove the key and disconnect the negative battery terminal. Wait at least 10-15 minutes: the cabin has airbags (SRS), and working near them with the power connected is not acceptable. You will have to reset the radio and the trip computer.
  2. Identify the panel type: in the Y61 the climate unit can be manual (rotary controls and an A/C button) or automatic. Buy exactly the version you have, and compare the connectors and the number of pins.
  3. Inspect the center part of the dash. Start by prying off the decorative bezels around the air vents and the radio with a plastic trim tool. Start at a corner and pull evenly without yanking: the plastic clips on older panels are brittle.
  4. If there are plugs or covers above the climate panel, the mounting screws are usually hidden under them. Remove the covers and unscrew the visible Phillips screws. Set each screw aside separately, remembering where it came from.
  5. Remove the decorative center panel by pulling it toward you. Do not pull sharply: wires may run to it (lighting, heated-seat switches, hazard switch, cigarette lighter connector). Locate all the connectors before pulling it any farther.
  6. Disconnect the lighting and switch connectors by pressing the locking tab. If you only need to replace the switch block next to the climate unit, you can usually unclip it from the bezel at this stage. Take a photo of its position first.
  7. If the climate unit is visible but will not come out, you may need to remove the front part of the center console or the radio to reach the screws. This is normal practice for this body. Remove it by releasing the clips and unscrewing the screws in the transfer case lever recess and the cup holders, if fitted.
  8. Remove the screws holding the climate unit (usually two to four on the sides) and carefully pull it out toward you.
  9. Disconnect all the connectors on the back of the unit. If the unit has cables or linkage rods for the air door actuators (on the manual version), note their position and how they are attached: unclip them from the lever or control. Do not kink the cables.
  10. Compare the new unit with the old one: whether the connectors, mounting points and control positions match. If needed, transfer the knobs, trim pieces and illumination bulbs to the new unit.
  11. Install the new unit in reverse order. First plug in the connectors, then the cables or rods, then screw the unit into its recess. Tighten the screws only moderately, by hand, without force: plastic mounts strip easily (there is no specified torque value).
  12. Before installing the decorative panels, reconnect the battery and test: the blower at all speeds, switching of the airflow modes, mixing of warm and cold air, the A/C and recirculation buttons, and the illumination.
  13. If everything works, disconnect the battery again, install the decorative panels and bezels onto the clips, and tighten the screws. Reconnect the battery and check the clock and the radio settings.

Common mistakes and warnings

  • Work only with the battery disconnected: SRS circuits run near the center console, and an accidental short can blow a fuse or damage the unit
  • Do not use bare metal tools, to avoid scratching the plastic and shorting the contacts
  • If the climate system does not turn on after the replacement, first check the fuses and the blower resistor or relay: this is a common cause unrelated to the panel
  • If you are not confident working near the SRS, leave the removal to a repair shop
