The side door glass on the Nissan X-Trail T30 is attached to the window regulator with two bolts and comes out upward through the slot under the weatherstrip after the door panel is removed. The job doesn't require special equipment, but you need to be careful with the clips and the vapor barrier.

Step by step

12 steps
  1. Park the vehicle on a level surface. If the glass is broken, cover the opening with plastic sheeting and vacuum the broken pieces from the outside and from the door panel. Wear gloves and safety glasses.
  2. For safety, disconnect the negative battery terminal. This prevents shorting the window regulator and central locking connectors when removing the door panel.
  3. Remove the trim covers and fasteners from the door panel: the inner handle cover or trim, the armrest handle, and the mounting screws. They are located in the handle recess, in the armrest, and along the edge of the panel. The exact locations depend on the trim level.
  4. Using the pry tool, carefully release the clips around the perimeter of the panel. Lift the panel upward to free it from the top edge, then disconnect the switch panel and speaker connectors, as well as the lock or handle rod.
  5. Carefully peel off or fold back the vapor barrier without tearing it. After reassembly, it must seal properly back into place.
  6. Connect the window switch (with the battery disconnected, use temporary power or reconnect the terminal) and move the glass to the position where the two bolts securing it to the regulator carriers are visible. Then disconnect the battery again.
  7. Tape the glass to the top edge of the frame so it can't drop down, and remove the two bolts securing the glass to the window regulator.
  8. Remove the inner (and, if necessary, outer) glass weatherstrip along the top edge of the opening. Tilt the glass and lift it out through the slot, making sure it doesn't bind on the glass run channel. If the glass was broken, collect the fragments from inside the door cavity.
  9. Clean the channels and grooves of dirt and glass fragments, inspect the weatherstrip, and replace it if worn. Lubricate the glass run channel with silicone lubricant.
  10. Install the new glass in reverse order: lower it into the door, align the holes with the regulator carriers, and tighten the bolts moderately without overtightening (approximately 4-8 N·m (3-6 lb-ft); check the manufacturer's specification for the exact value).
  11. Reconnect the battery and cycle the glass up and down several times. It must not tilt or rub against the weatherstrip. If necessary, loosen the bolts and adjust the position.
  12. Reinstall the vapor barrier, connect the connectors, and fit the door panel. Snap the clips into place, tighten the screws, and install the trim covers.

Common mistakes and warnings

  • When tempered glass breaks, it shatters into small fragments that remain inside the door cavity
  • Be sure to remove them, otherwise they will scratch the new glass and rattle
  • Do not force the glass when inserting it into the channel, and do not slam the door until the glass is secured to the window regulator
