Opel Astra H: Heater Blower Motor Repair and Replacement

Typical heater blower problems on the Astra H are motor failure at 150,000-250,000 km (humming, no rotation) or failure of the speed resistor (only one speed works, or the first speed does not work). The unit is accessed by removing the glove box.

Difficulty: Medium Time: 1-2 hours Steps: 10 Tools: 5.5 mm socket, ratchet, flat-blade screwdriver, flashlight

Step by step

10 steps
  1. Open the front passenger door and remove the glove box. Disconnect the stops on the sides, remove the mounting screws (usually Torx or Phillips), and pull the glove box toward you.
  2. Remove the cabin filter cover (if it gets in the way of access) by releasing the plastic clips.
  3. Locate the blower motor. It is a black cylindrical unit behind the center console, to the right of the A/C evaporator.
  4. Disconnect the two power connectors from the motor. Press the locking tabs and pull the plugs sideways.
  5. Remove the three motor mounting bolts with a 5.5 mm socket (access is limited, so you will have to work by feel).
  6. Take the motor out downward or sideways (the direction may differ depending on model year; rotate the housing until it clears the guides).
  7. If you are replacing the speed resistor, it is located on the blower housing (two plastic clips). Press the clips up with your finger, disconnect the connector, and pull out the resistor unit.
  8. Install the new motor or resistor in the reverse order. Make sure the clips or bolts are secure (tightening torque for the motor bolts is 3-5 N·m (2.2-3.7 lb-ft); do not overtighten the plastic mounts).
  9. Reconnect the power connectors, turn the ignition on, and check that all four blower speeds work before reassembly.
  10. Reinstall the filter cover and the glove box.

Common mistakes and warnings

  • The blower speed resistor contains a thermal fuse and a coiled wire resistance element of 0.2 ohm. Overheating can cause a wiring fire, so do not drive the vehicle if you smell melting plastic from the vents. If the motor hums but does not spin, turn the blower off immediately and replace the motor, because a seized rotor overloads the resistor. If you install a motor from a right-hand-drive model, you will need to reverse the connector polarity (swap the positive and negative wires) so the blower wheel spins in the correct direction.
