Opel Astra K: Replacing the Lower Cover of the Left Side Mirror Housing
The lower cover is a plastic trim piece that clips onto the bottom of the mirror housing. It can be removed without taking the mirror off the door. The exact layout of the clips and fastening screws for the Astra K is poorly documented in public sources. Below is a general procedure that works for mirrors of this type. Work carefully: the plastic clips are brittle. The engine (B16DTH) has no effect on this job.

Step by step
10 steps- Park the car on level ground and turn off the engine. Fold the mirror to the "parked" position using the power fold function or by hand, so you have easy access to the underside of the housing.
- Inspect the cover from below. If there are any screws, remove them. If there are no screws, the cover is held only by clips.
- Apply masking tape to the edges of the cover and the paint next to it so the pry tool doesn't leave scratches.
- Slide the plastic pry tool into the seam between the cover and the housing. Start on the side closest to the door pillar and release the clips one at a time around the perimeter. Don't pull abruptly: broken tabs on the housing will have to be repaired, or the housing replaced.
- If the cover won't come off, warm it and the seam with a heat gun or warm water. Cold plastic is brittle.
- Remove the cover and check underneath for damaged wiring, lighting (turn signal repeater or puddle light, if equipped), and the mounting of the mirror glass. Keep dirt and water from getting inside.
- Check that the mounting tabs and guides in the housing are intact. Clean the seam of dirt and remnants of old clips.
- Set the new cover into position and press it evenly around the perimeter until all the clips click in. If there were screws, tighten them gently (torque for plastic fasteners is minimal: just snug until they touch and seat lightly).
- If the cover is unpainted, paint it to match the body color before installing. To make fitting the gaps easier, first test-fit it without securing it.
- Remove the tape. Check the mirror adjustment and folding, as well as the heating and lighting, if equipped.
Common mistakes and warnings
- Don't apply heavy force when prying: if the mounting tabs on the mirror housing itself are broken, it is cheaper and more reliable to replace the housing or the complete mirror assembly
- If you have any doubts about the mirror's power mechanism or connectors, don't disconnect them unless necessary; if you're unsure, take it to a repair shop
