Volkswagen Pointer 1.8 AP (2004): Thermostat Replacement

On the AP 1.8 engine, the thermostat is located at the front of the cylinder block under the ignition coil. It opens at 87°C, which is the normal operating temperature for this engine. Replacement requires partially draining the coolant and removing the ignition coil to reach the housing.

Difficulty: Medium Time: 1-1.5 hours Steps: 11 Tools: 5 mm hex key, 8 mm wrenches (socket and box-end), ratchet, 5-6 L (5.3-6.3 qt) container for draining coolant, funnel

Part

  • 🔩 87°C thermostat (OE VW 056121113D or aftermarket equivalents from Wahler, Vernet, Calorstat for the AP 1.6/1.8/2.0 engine), thermostat housing gasket, G12+ red coolant concentrate 3 L (3.2 qt), distilled water 3 L (3.2 qt)

Step by step

11 steps
  1. Let the engine cool to 40-50°C. Working with hot coolant risks burns. Place a drain container under the radiator drain plug or the lower radiator hose, open the expansion tank cap to release pressure, and drain 3-4 L (3.2-4.2 qt) of coolant.
  2. Remove the decorative engine cover if fitted. Disconnect the connectors of the ignition coil and the spark plug wires.
  3. Remove the 3 ignition coil mounting screws with a 5 mm hex key and move the coil to the right without fully disconnecting the wires, to clear the work area above the thermostat.
  4. Locate the thermostat housing: a round metal flange on the front of the cylinder block with two 8 mm bolts. The upper bolt can be removed with a ratchet. The lower bolt needs a combination of ratchet and box-end wrench because access is limited under the steering tie rods.
  5. Remove the thermostat housing together with the old thermostat and gasket. Inspect the mating surface. If there is corrosion or deposits, clean it with fine sandpaper and wipe it with a clean rag.
  6. Fit the new gasket on the housing and insert the new thermostat with the valve facing into the block. Check the orientation against the locating pin or the mark on the thermostat housing.
  7. Thread both mounting bolts in by hand, then tighten them evenly in a crisscross pattern to 8-12 N·m (6-9 lb-ft). The housing may be aluminum or composite, and overtightening will cause cracks or stripped threads.
  8. Reinstall the ignition coil, tighten the screws to 5-7 N·m (4-5 lb-ft), and reconnect the connectors.
  9. Fill with coolant through the expansion tank up to the MAX mark. Use a 1:1 mix of G12+ concentrate and distilled water, or ready-mixed red G12+ coolant. The total cooling system capacity of the AP 1.8 engine is about 6-7 L (6.3-7.4 qt).
  10. Start the engine with the tank cap open and let it idle until the 87°C thermostat opens. The upper radiator hose will get warm and the fan will switch on. Bleed the air by gently squeezing the large hoses by hand. Shut off the engine and, once it is cold, top up the coolant to between MIN and MAX.
  11. Check the connections for leaks. After 50-100 km of driving, inspect the thermostat housing for seepage and check the level in the tank.

Common mistakes and warnings

  • Do not use a thermostat with an opening temperature below 87°C on the AP engine. The engine will run underheated, which increases fuel consumption and wear. Do not mix G11 blue and G12 red coolants. This can cause sediment to precipitate and clog the passages.
