What Car to Buy for 1.5 Million Roubles: New, Used and Five Questions Before You Pay
A new Haval Jolion costs from 2,099,000 roubles, not 1.45 million. We compared new car prices with the budget, looked at a used Corolla, Rio and Vesta, and listed five questions to ask...

Russian car roundups said a new Haval Jolion could be had for about 1.45 million roubles. We opened the Haval website: the price starts at 2,099,000 roubles, a gap of 650,000. So we did the sums honestly: you have 1.5 million roubles, what can you really buy in Russia? Three steps: new cars, used cars, and five questions that protect you from someone else's problem.

- A new Haval Jolion, UAZ Patriot, UAZ Hunter and the cheapest Belgee model all cost more than 1.5 million roubles.
- There are new cars for this money, mainly Lada, but the choice shrinks sharply.
- The used market offers more: Corolla, Rio and Vesta fit the budget and leave a reserve.
- 1.5 million is not much on the used market: the average used car costs 1,462,000 roubles.
- Do not spend the whole budget on the car: money for inspection and first service matters more than one extra model year.
Step 1. New cars
We compare the budget with prices from the manufacturers' Russian websites as of 3 November 2026.

New cars at this price do exist, mainly Lada. But then you are not buying the car you wanted, you are buying the one you could afford. Check the current Lada price with the brand or a dealer: we could not confirm it for November 2026, so we do not quote it.
Step 2. Used cars
According to Autostat, the average price of a used car in Russia in September 2026 was 1,462,000 roubles. So 1.5 million is not much on this market. It is simply the average.
But now there is a choice. We went through listings on Drom on 3 November: 60 listings per model, up to 1.5 million roubles. The table shows the typical price in that sample. It is not a market price: another sample or region will give other figures.

The big argument: a new Lada or a used Corolla
Option one: a new Lada with a warranty. A clean history, genuine mileage, and you are the first owner.
Option two: a used Corolla. A car of a different class, but all of someone else's sins are now yours.
The decision is yours. If you pick option two, the next step matters most.
Step 3. Five questions for a used car
- Is the mileage real? Compare the figure in the listing, the service book and the VIN report. If they do not match, walk away.
- Is the body intact? Bring a paint thickness gauge. Where the layer is thicker, the panel was repainted. Ask why.
- Is the history clean? A VIN check shows accidents, liens and restrictions. It takes five minutes.
- What about the engine and gearbox? Put the car on a lift at a garage you choose. If the seller objects, that is your answer.
- Why the rush? If they want the deal done today, they are the ones in a hurry, not you. Find out why before you pay.
This is what the leftover money is for. Keep a reserve for the inspection and first service instead of spending the whole budget on the car.
The bottom line
A new Haval, Belgee or Patriot does not fit into 1.5 million. The used market offers a choice, but this is only its average price. And a reserve for inspection matters more than one extra model year.
