Isuzu Rodeo (2nd generation): Parking Brake Adjustment

The adjustment is done in two stages: first set the clearance of the parking brake shoes in the rear brakes, then take up the free play in the cable with the adjusting nut at the lever. If you do the stages in the wrong order, the cable will only be making up for worn shoes and will stretch quickly.

Difficulty: Medium Time: 40-60 minutes Steps: 12 Tools: jack and jack stands, wheel chocks, lug wrench, small screwdriver for the adjuster wheel, 10-12 mm wrench for the locknut (confirm the size on your vehicle), low-range torque wrench, flashlight

Part

  • 🔩 Not needed for the adjustment itself. If the cable cannot be taken up fully, you will need a parking brake cable (front and rear, complete) and rear parking brake shoes

Step by step

12 steps
  1. Park the vehicle on level ground and chock the front wheels. Lower the parking brake lever completely.
  2. Loosen the cable adjusting nut at the lever so the cable has some slack. Without this, the shoes will not settle into the correct position.
  3. Lift the rear axle and set it on jack stands. Remove both rear wheels.
  4. Find the rubber plug of the adjustment access hole. On rear disc brakes, it is on the rotor or caliper; on drum brakes, it is on the backing plate. Remove it.
  5. Through the hole, use a screwdriver to turn the adjuster wheel in the tightening direction one tooth at a time until the rotor or drum can no longer be turned by hand.
  6. Then turn the wheel in the opposite direction one tooth at a time until the wheel turns freely with slight drag. This is usually 7-8 clicks from full lockup.
  7. Repeat steps 4-6 on the other wheel. The drag must be the same on both sides.
  8. Reinstall the plugs and mount the wheels. Lower the vehicle off the stands.
  9. Tighten the adjusting nut at the lever inside the cabin until the lever engages in 6-8 clicks with about 30 kgf (about 66 lb) of force on the handle.
  10. Release the lever and check that the rear wheels turn freely with slight shoe drag. If the wheels drag, loosen the nut by half a turn.
  11. Lock the nut with the locknut. The locknut torque is about 11 N·m (8 lb-ft). It is low, so do not overtighten and damage the threads.
  12. Test the parking brake on a slope with the lever applied. The vehicle must stay stationary.

Common mistakes and warnings

  • If the adjuster wheel does not provide enough adjustment and the lever still travels past 8 clicks, the parking brake shoes are worn or the cable is stretched. Do this adjustment only after replacing those parts. The parking brake affects safety. If you lack experience, have the system checked at a repair shop. Do not work under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Check the exact procedure and torque specifications for your rear brakes (disc or drum) against the manufacturer's service manual.
