Step by step

12 steps
  1. Let the engine cool down completely. The aluminum cylinder head expands more than the plugs when heated, which can cause the threads to seize or gall when you remove them.
  2. Disconnect the negative battery terminal for safety.
  3. Remove the decorative engine cover (if equipped). The clips are on the sides.
  4. Disconnect the ignition coil connectors. Press the locking tab and pull upward.
  5. Remove the mounting bolts of each coil (10 mm socket) and pull the coils straight up.
  6. Blow out the spark plug wells with compressed air or clean them with a brush to remove dirt and oil. It is important to keep debris from falling into the combustion chamber.
  7. Insert the spark plug socket with the extension into the well and unscrew the old plug counterclockwise.
  8. Check the gap of the new plug with a feeler gauge. It should be 1.0 mm (it is usually already set on iridium plugs).
  9. Thread the new plug in by hand for several turns to avoid cross-threading.
  10. Tighten with the spark plug socket. The torque for a tapered seat is 15-20 N·m (11-15 lb-ft), which is roughly a half turn after the taper makes contact. Do not overtighten. Tapered-seat plugs do not need much force.
  11. Reinstall the ignition coils until they click into place and tighten the mounting bolts.
  12. Reconnect the coil connectors, install the engine cover and reconnect the battery.

Common mistakes and warnings

  • Use only iridium or platinum plugs with a tapered seat. Copper plugs with a crush washer are not suitable for this engine. Never remove spark plugs from a hot engine. There is a high risk of stripping the threads in the aluminum cylinder head.
