Renault Duster 1.5 dCi K9K (2015): Glow Plug Replacement

Glow plugs on K9K diesel engines heat the combustion chamber before starting. Glow plug service life is 80,000-120,000 km. When they wear out, the engine starts poorly in cold weather and gray smoke appears on a cold start. Replace them as a set on a warm engine.

Difficulty: Medium Time: 1.5-2 hours Steps: 14 Tools: 10 mm extended deep socket with 1/4″ ratchet, torque wrench, adapters, air compressor or hand pump for blowing out the plug wells, flat-blade screwdriver, needle-nose pliers or tweezers, multimeter for resistance check

Part

  • 🔩 Glow plugs 4.4 V — Renault 8200682592, MOTRIO 8660001621 (set of 4). Alternatives: NGK, Bosch, Denso DG-619

Step by step

14 steps
  1. Warm the engine up to 50-60°C, shut it off, open the hood, and disconnect the negative battery terminal.
  2. Remove the air filter cover and the decorative engine cover (2 bolts and 2 clips).
  3. Disconnect the wiring harness clips and remove the caps from the glow plugs (no nuts, they simply pull straight up).
  4. Treat the glow plugs with penetrating oil (WD-40) and wait 10-15 minutes.
  5. Thoroughly blow out the plug wells with an air compressor or hand pump, since dirt and oil collect there.
  6. Using the extended 10 mm socket, unscrew the glow plugs, and use needle-nose pliers or tweezers to pull them out of the deep wells.
  7. Clean the threads in the cylinder head with a long screwdriver, making sure no debris falls into the cylinder.
  8. Wipe the seating surface with a clean rag.
  9. Check the new glow plugs with a multimeter: resistance should be 1.1-1.3 Ω when cold, and they should heat up to red-hot in 5 seconds.
  10. Apply high-temperature grease to the threads of the new glow plugs.
  11. Thread the plugs in by hand until snug, then tighten with a torque wrench to 12-14 N·m (9-10 lb-ft).
  12. Install the caps and secure the wiring harness with the clips (make sure the injector wires for cylinders 2 and 3 do not rub against the intake manifold).
  13. Install the decorative cover and the air filter housing, then reconnect the battery.
  14. Start the engine. With healthy glow plugs, gray smoke is minimal on a cold start (down to -10°C), and the engine starts in 2-3 seconds.

Common mistakes and warnings

  • Replace the glow plugs only as a set of 4. Even partially working old plugs heat up 7-8 times slower than new ones, which hurts cold starting and increases engine wear. Do not let dirt or oil get into the combustion chamber when removing the plugs. The glow plug in cylinder 4 (closest to the transmission) often seizes, so use penetrating oil and remove it with the engine warm.
