Renault Duster (1st generation): Power Steering Reservoir Removal and Installation

On the first-generation Renault Duster, the power steering reservoir is held on a plastic bracket by an H4 hex screw, in the central part of the engine bay (on the cooling fan shroud). Removal requires draining the fluid, disconnecting two hoses (supply to the pump and return from the steering rack), and lifting the reservoir up out of the bracket slots. The procedure is simple but requires care: the plastic retaining tabs on the bracket are brittle and can break if the reservoir is moved sideways.

Difficulty: Easy Time: 20-30 minutes Steps: 10 Tools: H4 hex key, hose clamp pliers (or regular pliers), 1 L (1.1 qt) container for fluid, syringe with tube (for draining), shop rags

Part

  • 🔩 Power steering reservoir complete with cap — Renault 491803558R or 7704001604 (interchangeable numbers). Reservoir mounting bracket — Renault 8200615314 (if replacement is needed). Hose clamps — Renault 7703083470 (large, 22 mm) and 7703083469 (small). Power steering fluid ELF RENAULTMATIC D2

Step by step

10 steps
  1. Shut off the engine and let it cool. Open the hood and find the power steering reservoir in the center of the engine bay (a black plastic tank with a transparent MINI-MAXI level strip).
  2. Draw the fluid out of the reservoir with the syringe and tube into the prepared container (about 0.5-0.8 L (0.5-0.8 qt)). Remove as much as possible to minimize spillage when disconnecting the hoses.
  3. Loosen the clamps on the two reservoir hoses with pliers (the supply hose to the power steering pump at the bottom and the return hose from the steering rack). Slide the clamps along the hoses 3-5 cm away from the reservoir fittings.
  4. Gently rocking them, pull both hoses off the reservoir fittings. Place rags underneath, as residual fluid will run out (50-100 ml). Plug the open ends of the hoses with a clean rag or plugs to keep dirt out of the system.
  5. Remove the H4 hex screw that secures the reservoir bracket to the cooling fan shroud. The screw is at the bottom of the bracket.
  6. Lift the reservoir straight up, guiding it out of the slots in the plastic bracket. Do NOT pull it sideways, because sideways force breaks the retaining tabs on the bracket.
  7. Install the new or cleaned reservoir in reverse order: insert it into the bracket slots with a top-down motion until it clicks, then tighten the H4 screw (tightening torque 5-8 N·m (3.7-5.9 lb-ft); do not overtighten, since it is plastic).
  8. Push the hoses onto the reservoir fittings all the way, move the clamps back into position and tighten them with pliers. Check by hand that the hoses are seated securely.
  9. Fill with fresh ELF RENAULTMATIC D2 fluid up to the MAXI level. Start the engine and turn the steering wheel from lock to lock 5-7 times to bleed the system. Shut off the engine, check the level and top up to MAXI if needed.
  10. Inspect the connections for leaks, start the engine and turn the steering wheel lock to lock once more. If there are no leaks, the job is done.

Common mistakes and warnings

  • The plastic reservoir mounting bracket (part number 8200615314) has brittle retaining tabs. When removing the reservoir, you MUST pull straight up without rocking it sideways, or the tabs will break and the bracket will need to be replaced. Power steering fluid is aggressive to paint and rubber, so wipe up any spilled fluid immediately from surfaces and components in the engine bay. Do not use automatic transmission fluid (ATF) in place of the specified ELF RENAULTMATIC D2, because incompatible additives shorten the life of the pump and steering rack.
