UAZ 452: Installing a Cabin Air Filter (Ventilation System Modification)

The UAZ 452 did not come from the factory with a cabin air filter. Air is drawn straight into the heater without being cleaned. Installing a cabin air filter requires modifying the ventilation system by tapping a filter housing into the heater air duct. The procedure is similar to the one used on the 2017 UAZ 2206, where the filter was offered as an option.

Difficulty: Medium Time: 1-2 hours Steps: 7 Tools: Phillips screwdriver, utility knife, 2 metal hose clamps, flexible corrugated air duct 60-80 mm in diameter (sized to the heater duct)

Part

  • 🔩 Round-type air filter (similar to the one used on the UAZ 2206/3741 under the driver's seat), or a rectangular cabin air filter from the UAZ Patriot with an adapter housing

Step by step

7 steps
  1. Choose where to mount the filter housing. The typical location is under the driver's seat, on the duct that runs to the heater. Remove the seat (4 bolts securing it to the floor).
  2. Remove the black protective cover over the air duct under the seat. Inspect the duct. If it is one continuous piece, you will need to cut it at a convenient spot to fit the filter housing.
  3. Pick a housing for a round-type filter (typical diameter 60-80 mm to fit the UAZ heater duct), or make an adapter to mount a rectangular cabin air filter from the UAZ Patriot.
  4. Cut the air duct with a utility knife, insert the filter housing between the two sections of duct, and secure it with metal clamps on both sides (tighten firmly, with no play).
  5. Install the filter element in the housing and close the housing cover.
  6. While you are at it, check the condition of the clamps on the oil cooler (if applicable to your version) and tighten them if needed.
  7. Reinstall the protective cover and the driver's seat.

Common mistakes and warnings

  • This modification is not provided for by the manufacturer and is considered a DIY upgrade. It is important to make the clamped connections airtight. Otherwise, unfiltered air will bypass the filter and enter the cabin. Replace the filter every 10-15 thousand km (6,000-9,000 miles) when driving on dusty dirt roads, and every 20 thousand km (12,000 miles) in city driving.
