UAZ 452 2.7 ZMZ-40911 (2017): Engine Oil and Oil Filter Change

The ZMZ-40911 engine requires an oil change every 10,000-15,000 km or once a year. The lubrication system capacity is 7.0 L (7.4 qt). This is a standard procedure performed over a pit or on a lift.

Difficulty: Easy Time: 30-40 minutes Steps: 16 Tools: 19 mm wrench (or socket), oil filter wrench (if needed), funnel, drain pan with a capacity of at least 7 L (7.4 qt), shop rags

Part

  • 🔩 Oil filter 406.1012005 or 409.1012005 (equivalents: Mann W920/21, FILTRON OP520/1). Engine oil 5W-30 or 5W-40, API SJ/SL/SM or higher, 7 L (7.4 qt)

Step by step

16 steps
  1. Warm the engine up to operating temperature (5-7 minutes of running), then shut it off. Hot oil drains faster.
  2. Raise the vehicle on a pit or lift and secure it with the parking brake.
  3. Remove the skid plate (engine underbody shield), if installed. It is usually held by 4-6 bolts around the perimeter.
  4. Place the drain pan under the oil pan drain plug (at the rear of the oil pan).
  5. Loosen the drain plug counterclockwise with a 19 mm wrench. Be careful, the oil is hot.
  6. Let the oil drain completely (10-15 minutes). Inspect the drain plug sealing washer and replace it if worn.
  7. Unscrew the oil filter (located on the right side of the cylinder block) counterclockwise by hand or with an oil filter wrench.
  8. Wipe the filter mounting surface with a clean rag and make sure the old gasket did not stay behind on the block.
  9. Lubricate the rubber sealing ring of the new filter with clean engine oil and fill the filter about one-third full with oil.
  10. Screw the new filter on by hand until the gasket touches the block, then tighten it an additional 3/4 turn. Do not use a filter wrench for tightening.
  11. Install the drain plug and tighten it to 40-50 N·m (30-37 lb-ft) (or hand-tight plus a quarter turn with the wrench).
  12. Pour about 6.5 L (6.9 qt) of oil through a funnel into the oil filler neck (on the valve cover).
  13. Start the engine and let it idle for 30-40 seconds. The oil pressure warning light should go out.
  14. Shut off the engine and wait 5 minutes for the oil to drain back into the oil pan.
  15. Check the level with the dipstick. It should be between the MIN and MAX marks, closer to MAX. If necessary, add 0.3-0.5 L (0.3-0.5 qt).
  16. Inspect the drain plug and filter areas for leaks, then reinstall the skid plate.

Common mistakes and warnings

  • Do not start the engine with the oil level below MIN. This will cause oil starvation and damage to the crankshaft bearings. Dispose of used oil at a designated collection facility. Dumping it on the ground or down a drain is prohibited by law.
