UAZ Patriot (1st generation): Front Bumper Removal and Installation

On the 2013 Patriot, the front bumper is plastic and is attached to the body and the reinforcement beam with bolts, screws, and clips. The exact step-by-step procedure for this model is not documented in publicly available service materials, so the general sequence typical for bumpers of this type is given below. Check fastener sizes and the number of mounting points as you go. Work with a helper to avoid damaging the paint and connectors.

Difficulty: Medium Time: 1-2 hours Steps: 9 Tools: socket and wrench set (typically 10, 13, 17 mm), Phillips and flat-blade screwdrivers, plastic clip removal tool, jack and jack stands or an inspection pit, Torx socket if needed, helper

Part

  • 🔩 Complete front bumper assembly (painted or body-color, depending on trim level). You may also need a set of plastic clips and mounting screws, a bumper trim piece, a bumper grille, and fog lights

Step by step

9 steps
  1. Park the vehicle on level ground and set the parking brake. If necessary, raise the front of the vehicle and support it on jack stands. Turn the ignition off and disconnect the negative battery terminal if the bumper has fog lights.
  2. Open the hood. Remove the upper bumper mounts to the radiator shroud and the upper crossmember: these are usually screws and plastic clips. Pry the clips up with the removal tool without breaking them.
  3. Remove the lower mounts: if there is a plastic skid plate or spoiler under the bumper, unbolt it. Remove the lower bolts and screws that go to the frame and crossmember.
  4. Remove the bumper-to-fender mounts on the sides: bolts or screws in the wheel wells. For access, you can loosen the fender liners slightly or bend them back.
  5. If fog lights are installed, disconnect their power connectors by pressing the locking tab. Remove the headlight washer hoses if equipped. If there are parking sensors, disconnect their connectors.
  6. Remove the tow hook mounts and decorative trim pieces before taking the bumper off if they are in the way.
  7. Make sure all mounting points are released. With a helper, carefully pull the bumper forward, supporting it on both sides, then lift it away and set it on a soft surface.
  8. Installation is the reverse of removal. Align the bumper with the guides on the fenders and the reinforcement beam, start the side and lower fasteners by hand first, then the upper ones. Check that the gaps with the hood and fenders are even before final tightening.
  9. Reconnect the light and sensor connectors and the battery. Check that the parking lights and fog lights work. Torque specifications are not defined for plastic parts, so tighten without excessive force to avoid stripping threads or cracking the plastic.

Common mistakes and warnings

  • Do not pull hard on the bumper until you are sure all fasteners are removed: plastic mounting tabs break easily, and the paint on the edges scratches easily. If a winch, bull bar, or other accessory is mounted on the bumper, remove it before taking the bumper off. Wear gloves and work with a helper to support the bumper.
