Volkswagen Golf Plus (1st generation): Diagnosing and Replacing the Tailgate Lock Actuator

On the Golf Plus, the tailgate opens electrically: the signal from the button in the handle or from the key fob goes to the actuator in the lock. Common causes of failure include broken or corroded wires in the rubber boot between the body and the tailgate, a worn button, corroded actuator contacts, and a sticking lock mechanism. First, determine what is actually faulty: the button, the wiring, or the actuator. Only then replace the lock.

Step by step

12 steps
  1. Check the fuse for the central locking and tailgate circuit (fuse box under the dashboard on the left). If the fuse is intact, move on.
  2. Identify the symptoms. If the actuator clicks but does not release the lock, the lock mechanism or linkage is most likely worn. If there is no sound and no movement, check the button and wiring. If the lock does not open from the key fob but opens from the button, or the other way around, look for the cause in the corresponding circuit.
  3. Open the tailgate. If the electrics do not work, use the emergency release: from inside the cabin, fold down the rear seat backrest to reach the lock and open it manually. This also helps you work safely.
  4. Carefully remove the plastic inner trim panel from the tailgate. Use plastic trim tools to pop the clips around the perimeter and remove the fasteners, if any. Do not pull abruptly, to avoid breaking the clips.
  5. Inspect the rubber boot with the wires between the body and the tailgate. Slide the boot back and check the condition of the conductors and insulation. Breaks at the bend point are the most common cause.
  6. Check the voltage at the lock actuator connector while pressing the button or sending a command from the key fob. If voltage is present but the actuator does not respond, the actuator or the lock itself is faulty. If there is no voltage, look for the cause in the button, the wiring, or the comfort control module.
  7. Check the release button in the handle: disconnect the connector and test the contacts with a multimeter while pressing the button. If there is an open circuit or poor contact, replace the button or the complete handle (depending on the version).
  8. To replace the lock, disconnect the actuator connector and remove the lock mounting bolts (usually 2-3 bolts). Disconnect the linkage rod and cable, if present. Note the position of the rods, and preferably take a photo.
  9. Remove the lock and compare the new one with the old one: the number of connector pins and the shape and position of the rods must match. Before installing, lubricate the mechanism with a dedicated lock lubricant.
  10. Install the lock, connect the connector, and tighten the bolts evenly without overtightening. The approximate torque for bolts like these is 8-12 N·m (6-9 lb-ft); check the exact value in the manufacturer's specifications.
  11. Before installing the trim, test the operation: close and open the tailgate several times using the button, the key fob, and by hand. Make sure the tailgate latches securely and does not open under light pressure. If necessary, adjust the position of the striker on the body.
  12. Install the trim panel and clips. If wires in the boot were broken, repair them by soldering and heat-shrink tubing. Do not join them by simply twisting the wires together.

Common mistakes and warnings

  • When working on the electrical system, disconnect the negative battery terminal to avoid a short circuit and accidental activation
  • Make sure the tailgate latches securely: an unlatched tailgate can open while driving
  • If the actuator connector is corroded, clean it with a dedicated contact cleaner
  • If the problem persists after replacement, the cause may be the comfort control module or the wiring, and it is best to take the car to a repair shop for a scanner diagnosis
