DAF XF 95 (2000): A/C System Maintenance
A/C maintenance on a DAF XF 95 with the 12.6 XE 315C engine includes checking the drive belt, cleaning the A/C condenser, leak testing, measuring pressures, and recharging. The system uses R134a refrigerant. The exact refrigerant and oil quantities are given on the label, so follow it rather than generic figures.

Tools
8- R134a manifold gauge set (low and high pressure)

- electronic scale
- leak detector (electronic or UV)
- vent thermometer
- wrench set
- soft brush and low-pressure water spray gun for rinsing
- belt tension gauge or torque wrench
Step by step
14 steps- Park the vehicle on level ground, apply the parking brake, and place wheel chocks. Shut off the engine and let it cool down. Wear safety glasses and gloves: refrigerant can cause frostbite to skin and eyes.
- Inspect the system visually. Check the hoses, lines, fittings, and connections. Oily spots and dirt on the connections indicate a leak. Inspect the compressor clutch and the dust boots.
- Check the compressor drive belt for cracks, delamination, and oil contamination. Replace it if necessary and adjust the tension. Take the tension value from the service manual for the 12.6 XE engine, as it depends on the belt type and drive.
- Clean the A/C condenser and the engine cooling radiator on the outside. Blow them out with compressed air or rinse them with low-pressure water against the direction of airflow. Check that the fins are not crushed and that there is no debris between the radiators.
- Check the cabin air filter, if equipped, and replace it if dirty. Check the evaporator drain tubes: they must be clear. Condensate should drain under the vehicle.
- Start the engine at 1200-1500 rpm, set the A/C to maximum, and let it run for 5-10 minutes. Check that the compressor clutch engages and the fans are running. Measure the air temperature at the vent. A healthy system delivers about 5-10 °C at a moderate outside temperature.
- Connect the gauges to the low-pressure and high-pressure service ports. Compare the readings with the pressures for the ambient temperature. Reference values for R134a at 20-25 °C: low side 1.5-2.5 bar, high side 12-16 bar. A sharp deviation from these values indicates a fault. Low pressures on both sides point to a lack of refrigerant. High-side pressure above normal indicates poor condenser cooling, excess refrigerant, or air in the system.
- Check the receiver-drier sight glass, if equipped. Constant bubbles indicate a lack of refrigerant, while oily streaks and cloudiness indicate contamination of the circuit.
- Check for leaks with a leak detector: the compressor, fittings, receiver-drier, A/C condenser, hoses, and areas near the evaporator. If a leak is found, do not charge the system until it is fixed.
- If the system needs recharging, recover the remaining refrigerant with the station. Refrigerant must not be vented into the atmosphere. If the circuit was opened or parts were replaced, replace the receiver-drier and the O-rings (lubricate them with PAG oil).
- Evacuate the system for at least 30-45 minutes, to a deep vacuum. Hold for 10-15 minutes and make sure the vacuum does not drop, otherwise there is a leak.
- Charge R134a refrigerant by weight, using an electronic scale. The charge weight and oil type are given on the label in the engine compartment or on the compressor. If there is no label, check the DAF service manual. Before starting the engine, wait a few minutes for the pressure to equalize.
- Start the engine, turn on the A/C, and repeat the pressure and temperature measurements from steps 6-7. The pressures should be normal and the outlet air noticeably cold.
- Disconnect the gauges and install the caps on the service ports. Check the connections with the leak detector once more. Once every 1-2 weeks in the off-season, run the A/C for 5-10 minutes to lubricate the seals and the compressor.
Common mistakes and warnings
- Work with refrigerant while wearing safety glasses and gloves, in a ventilated area
- Never vent R134a into the atmosphere or heat the cylinders
- Work that involves opening the circuit, recovery, and charging requires a recovery station and a vacuum pump
- If you don't have this equipment and experience, take the vehicle to a specialist shop
- Do not add sealants or "universal" additives unless necessary: they clog the receiver-drier and the valve, and the compressor may fail
